Some years ago in Las Cruces, New Mexico, we saw a musician I'd never heard of before by the name of Tom Russell, a sort of cowboy poet, which is certainly damning him w/ faint praise. To cut to the chase, he tore the walls down. What a fine musician, and he has a heck of a stage presence. Never mind that his songs were just a lot of fun to listen to.
I was looking at one of his videos afterwards on youtube, and the B&W photos illustrating it were very, very good. Turns out that the photographer was also someone I'd never heard of before, a gentleman by the name of David Bruckhalter who hails from Tuscon, Arizona. I've searched and searched on the web w/o much success, so if I want to see more of his work I guess I'll have to travel over to Tucson, where he's one of the photographers featured at the Center for Creative Photography, or buy his book(s) on Amazon.com. Here's the video, since I can't find anything else to show. The image quality seems to have been dumbed down since I last saw this a few years ago, and I genuinely apologize for that, but it gives you a tiny sense of David's work.
Political Disclaimer: This was/is a hot button subject in the Southwest states of the US, and make no mistake, David and Tom have carved out their stance in no uncertain terms, so if you're a fan of FOX News, don't bother. You won't like the photos and you won't like the video. David is probably the only living photographer I plan on buying once that lottery ticket comes up right. And if it never does, well, I would like to buy his work, anyway. The second link is the same song sung live sans David's photos, just to give you a taste of what you can expect if you ever get lucky enough to hear this very talented, very real, man sing his music live. There are so many, many great photographers, artists and musicians out there that never get any "fame" until they're, of course, dead. Go see David's work, wherever the hell it is. It will be worth the search.
