I'd suggest a trip to the library to get an idea of the process. If you can't find a community college, college, or a "free school", you might talk to the people at your local camera store, if one still exists. Look for a local group here on apug. I'm old, so I remember the high school darkroom and photo clubs. It's a simple process to learn, and everything is "open book". Loading film onto the developing reel will probably be your biggest challenge (you might want to use a sacrificial roll of film as a practice piece). Black and white chemistry is pretty straight forward, and can be learned by anyone. But remember that it is a learning process, and failures, big and small, are in your future, but then, so is success! good luck!

Take a basic B&W class at ICP in mid-town Manhattan (a short train ride from Westchester). Their instructors are very good and the atmosphere/vibes are good also.

If you can read and folow instructions, you will have few sacrificial rolls. Of course, the longer you are involved and more creative you consider yourself, that number will rise. Learn the basics, and all else will follow. It's mostly about developing(sic) a routine, and staying with it.
