Damn Anti Virus software.

I have used AVG Anti Virus software for at least 12 years with Windowes XP and never had a problem until today. I started up my laptop and it began to load as normal then the AVG update kicked in, also normal and all appeared well until I came to check my E mail! It seems that AVG thought this was a problem and uninstalled it for me! I no longer have the Outlook Express disc so cannot reload. The when I was about to try to download something else a pop - up appeared in the corner of the screen telling me it had also blocked the software for my Nikon LS50 Scanner it apparently thought it was a 'threat'.

I checked the database and the Nikon software was still there but I could not access it so had to uninstall this as well and then with a dread that it would not install again I went ahead. There was one little glitch but I overcame this and at least that is now working again.

As the laptop is only used for working the Nikon Scanner and occasionally E Mail I have disabled the internet connection and uninstalled the AVG. Why should it suddenly disable two perfectly safe programmes, I can only think the update was something to do with it. Any thoughts!

AVG is a virus imho. It has totally ruined a number of hard drives it was installed on. You can never fully uninstall AVG unless you go to kasperski anti-virus website and download their AVG removal tool.

I have managed to at least get rid of the main components and it has not reared it's head again. I am taking the easy way out and as the laptop is old I am keeping it only as a platform to use the Nikon software and replacing it the laptop with one bought second hand from my partners family which has Windows 7 and is about 1/3rd of the age of the older one. It also has a much bigger HD, at least 3x the RAM and a faster operating system. AND no AVG

Microsoft Security Essentials is actually not too bad. I used to use AVG as well but they started slipping toolbars and other junk in their installers and that was it for me.

I am starting to agree with you. As good as it is, the AVG insists on downloading updates whenever I start the computer and this slows everything down until it has finished. It was OK when I started but it is getting too big for it's own good and is irritating to say the least.

Does anyone know how to change the update to when I close down or do a scan? The information is not very clear what or when you can do it.
