For something completely different then a museum gallery, try Claude Taylor Photography just for the fun of it.

The NGA is in between big photo shows and I don't think there are any major photo exhibitions elsewhere, but my current favorites are the Nam June Paik show at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition at the Portrait Gallery (double score--they share the same building). If you're there, you can also see Pictures in the Parlor, an exhibit of hand-colored tintypes and photos. The Smithsonian Castle has a nice civil war photography exhibit, including camera and luscious Harrison Globe lens.

Check out the Alt Process show at ArtDC!

for hours and times.

If getting to Hyattsville is a pain, just take a walk up 14th Street from Thomas Circle to U Street. There are a number of galleries in that area, not sure what they're showing. There's something tonight at Hemphill Gallery that I keep getting announcements about on Facebook. On another day, drive out to Glen Echo Park and check out the show at Photoworks -

I like to point visitors in the direction of the National Building Museum, which is at the Judiciary Square Metro stop. A spectacular interior space (5 floor high atrium) and some really interesting exhibits. Also, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and Museum of American Art is first rate (Gallery Place Metro stop).
