d-19 as paper developer

a while back i decided to buy some kodak d-19 to experiment with it but i never really did because of alot of unknown development times and too much contrast.

my question is. has anyone every used film developers as paper developers? and if so. had anyone ever noticed i adifference?

The answer is yes. This subject has been addressed in several APUG threads. Also, see the postings in the APUG Chemistry Recipes (for both paper and film developers).

Regarding Kodak D-19, the Kodak D-19 formulation is a MQ formulation that is reasonably close to Kodak D-72 (Dektol) although there are differences in the Metol/Hydroquinone/Potassium Bromide ratios. It should work reasonably well as a paper developer undiluted and diluted 1:1 with water.

Kodak D-19

Water at 125F----------------------500 ml
Metol---------------------------------2 grams
Sodium Sulfite, dessicated------------90 grams
Hydroquinone-------------------------8 grams
Sodium Carbonate monohydrate------52.5 grams
Potassium Bromide--------------------5 grams
Cold water to make------------------1 liter

D19 is designed to be a high contrast neg & plate developer with its main application in processing x-rays & aero films.

As such it would not make a particulary suitable paper developer, it also has a high bromide level

Kodaks published formula is actually:

Kodak D-19

Water at 125F----------------------500 ml
Metol---------------------------------2.2 grams
Sodium Sulfite, dessicated------------96 grams
Hydroquinone-------------------------8.8 grams
Sodium Carbonate monohydrate-------48 grams
Potassium Bromide--------------------5 grams
Cold water to make-------------------1 liter

There is a variation:

D-19b

Water at 125F----------------------500 ml
Metol---------------------------------2.2 grams
Sodium Sulfite, dessicated------------72 grams
Hydroquinone-------------------------8.8 grams
Sodium Carbonate, anhydrous--------48 grams
Potassium Bromide--------------------4 grams
Cold water to make-------------------1 liter
