cyanotypes on glass

hi kevin

i sub coat the glass with alum hardened gelatin
and add the classic cyanotype chemistry to that.
i recently saw a video on flickr ( in the alt process area )
where the person does it a bit different, he mixes everything together
i guess there's lots of ways to do it, .. paper's nice, but glass images are my favorite

I've thought about it but never tried. My idea was using matted glass (for adhesion sake) with formaldehyde- hardened gelatin base. Are you trying to make "blue Ambrotypes". That would be cool!

yep, blue ones are fun
i also brush on an extremely dilute sodum carbonate bath
as i do with paper and tone them / paint them
ive made a few .. i often times get bored
soak in hot water and coat the glass again ...
( recycle/reuse/recoat/rethink ) ..

Found instructions for that process written by Joseph J. McAllister online in pdf Form Dead Link Removed. The process sounds interesting and worth doing.

he adds something else to the strange brew of cyanotype chemistry
( maybe changing it to REX by adding oxalic to it ?) ..

This reminds me of this article on printing platinum on glass -

In that article they used a delicately formulated polymer. It's interesting to think a much simpler coating may have worked. I wonder what the ultimate difference would be in the final product? I had wanted to try a workable fixative (like Krylon Fixed it or others) when I got around to trying this to see if I could save some effort. It's cool seeing cyanotype on glass / thanks for sharing !

Btw I've also seen a few images where the cyanotype was backed with metal leaf making an alternative Orotone.
