Great video... enjoyed the chemistry between the host and the conservator, very engaging vs. a dry historic presentation.

So those are actually silhouettes vs. negatives (photograms?) Reminds me of the first day of high school photography, though we used RC paper.

Just think of the work that went into making those volumes! Each page is a unique print. An ambitious project, to say the least :smile:

Technically they are called "photograms" as M. Carter pointed out, not photographs. Also, why isn't the conservator wearing gloves as well?

"Photographic images" is what it sounds they decided on (presenter and curator). I am a little surprised the curator also did not have gloves on, but perhaps he just washed his hands and knows better than to touch his face, etc. Fingers do not produce oils. The presenter/host could not keep his hands away from the book -- good call to keep gloves on him!

photograms=Schadograph=Rayograph

Christian Schad was slightly ahead of Manray but didn't name them after himself. They began to be called Schadograph by Tristan Tarza.
Manray being more modest(chuckle) didn't hesitate.

It's funny how old things are reinvented isn't it?

i had never heard of christian schad, thanks !

not photography but considering some of the cave paintings in lascaux were
made with a hand on the wall and paint pigment blown around the hand leaving a hand-print, it seems
photogramesque art has been around for a long long time :smile:

and there really isn't anything new under the sun ...:smile:
