Is there documentation somewhere online about how Edward S. Curtis produced his Orotones?

I've been having a go using acrylic paints but mine just look incredibly tacky/naff like a cheap mirror from a souvenir shop rather than the intended subtle work of art!

I saw somewhere Curtis used bronze powder in banana oil but nothing more specific.
