Cullmann MD44 User Manual?

Hi all. Been lurking for a while, but this is my first post and I'm asking for some help!

Looking for a User Manual but cant find one anywhere - all the usual places tried!

I dug out my old Cullmann MD44 flashgun (bought new years ago - used rarely) + Power pack 454, bracket and data cable and would like to use it on my Nikon F90X (amongst others) and maybe DSLR (Pentax K10D)

I believe it has TTL mode as well as auto sensor and M, but can't find a User Manual anywhere

Anyone got a copy? Or know where to get one?

This flash comes in different variants, und different brands. I do not know of a manual. But your model is selfexplanatory, for anyone with basic knowledge of classic flashes.


Your flash is SCA series 300 adapter flash. I never came across a Cullmann SCA adapter. But common are those made by Metz. They are interchangable between brands.


For your Nikon F90X
you need the Metz adapter "343" or "346 2AF" the latter in addition incorporating the AF funktion.
Set the flash at "TTL".

For your Pentax K10D
likely is no SCA adapter, but you likely may use the camera in manual mode and use the autoexposure function (set at "4" and "8") of the flash itself. Set the ISO of the camera at the flash too. For coupling you need the non-dedicated SCA 300/3000 adapter with just 1 pin at its foot.
Beware of the synch voltage of your flash, it may be too high for that camera!
In this case case you would need in addition a voltage-reducing hot-shoe adapter.

I originally bought it with a Canon Eos 100FN back when they were both new on the market
It came with a data cable that would either disconnect into two parts where one part would connect to the flashgun and become hotshoe mount, or connect as one piece data cable that connected to hotshoe and the power pack 4544. I assumed it was TTL flash as there is a setting on the main flashgun for that
Kinda hoping I can still get TTL flash on my Nikon, even though it was originally bought with Canon
I'll see if I can get a shot of the hotshoe connector end that may help clarify

From what I see at your photo it seems you got that undedicated adapter.


As I said flash-TTL for you Nikon camera will be no problem once you got the right adapter. That handgrip will allow you to use the Metz TTL cable for off-camera use of your flash, but for this you need Metz cable "300 A", that will be mounted on top of the adapter, instead of the flash.

The cable you describe is puzzling me. It makes no sense to combine sync/data cable with the charging cable.
But a photo is worth 1000 words, well 997...

Has anyone an idea what that sensor(?) at the top of that handgrip is for?


I think I got it: slave-(sync)sensor


The Metz grips have not got such...
