I've just noticed my paper supplier has the new CA type H (velvet) colour paper in stock. Has anyone tried it? I've used matt and gloss surfaces before and wondering how it compares in terms of feel, contrast and saturation.

I think you are possibly mixing up two products, type H paper = "canvas" base (available in matt and glossy), the "velvet" paper is a different paper again it seems... Anyway, I think such speciality papers are really difficult to describe and given the considerable investment for a roll of these papers I would definitely ask the supplier for samples to see if it fits your needs. The supplier should also be able to tell you how the contrast and saturation behaves in relation to standard CA and CA DPII. Unfortunately I have used neither of the two (canvas/velvet), so I cannot contribute anything further.

I think you're right about me mixing up two papers. This is the stuff I was talking about: http://www.ag-photographic.co.uk/ca-professional-velvet---305-cm-12-x-838-metres-3980-p.asp

And yes, this is the H surface: http://www.ag-photographic.co.uk/crystal-archive-type-h-canvas-528-c.asp

I had a chat with the supplier about the velvet surface and they said it's a touch lower contrast than the usual Fuji paper. I think I'm going to stick to my original plan and try a roll of Kodak Endura Premier this time.
