I found some unmarked paper in my collection and tried printing on it. fell in love and want more. All I can say is it's very creamy color (not quite chamois), fiber and absolutely no gloss or sheen. perfectly flat matte.

any ideas on what it might be? picky picky!

thanks! Dorothy............. and yes.......... I've checked all the other threads.............

Fomatone 542 might be close, or the very matt-finish (although it has a less creamy base and tone) Fomatone 132. There are no doubt many more papers from other manufacturers (over the years) which might meet the description but which I haven't ever used.... Given the base-colour it's probably not a current Ilfordphoto paper though(?).

What is the base weight? Is it a multigrade paper, or fixed grade? Any other distinguishing features?!

Edit: Going back in time a fair bit, would Agfa Portriga be fogged by now, if it was sitting on a shelf in someone's darkroom? And there are no doubt a heap of US manufacturers that I've never heard of, inevitably.

Hi Martin, the 542 is chamois no? I've tried the new chamois and it is not what i'm thinking of, nor is it a acceptable replacement for the old chamois. The old chamois can never be replaced except maybe by the Ilford Art which is to die for! No, the paper I have is a multigrade/VC fiber but there is no sheen to it and no texture. No gloss, and the color is creamy leaning to yellow but not as much as the chamois. I thought the Fomatone 132 Classic had a sheen to it. Does the Ilford WT matte have any sheen?
I've never used Agfa Portriga, but tried Kentmere but that's pretty far back.

Thanks for your reply anyway,
Dorothy

I never had any Ektalure, although I have heard of it's great reputation. I'll have to try and remember all the papers I've ever purchased and maybe I can narrow it down that way.

How about Forte Polywarmtone Art or it's Bergger equivalent VC Style? Ivory base but I'm not sure what surfaces they came in. I always looked for a glossy paper and in those the best was a semi-gloss. Or maybe a version of Oriental VC warmtone. That had a non glossy surface but I don't believe it was that creamy a base.

These are all the warmtone papers I've bought over the years. I'm looking for the one which is cream based and flat matt - no gloss/sheen, no egg shell sheen.
Any experience with any of these? Not even sure if they're all warmtone, especially the GL #2.

Forte Polywarmtone Art FB HD Mat
Kentmere Bromide GL #2
Kentmere Fineprint VC FB Warmtone
Oriental Seagull VC-FW DW Warmtone Lustre
Ilford Multigrade Fiber Mat Warm Tone
Fomatone VC FB Matte MG 132 Classic Cream Base WT
Fomatone VC FB Cham MG 542 Classic Cream Base WT

I tried the Bergger ART cotton rag, and got a bad batch - had stripes in it, really heavy weight, but that isn't it.

The 132 I have is totally matt, not having any sheen at all (air dried, no heat), but there have been one or two changes during the Foma modernisations over the last five years. There is also a Fomatone 532 which is listed as being between their warmtone paper and the 542 - worth a look perhaps, though I haven't used it to compare with 542 (yet).

If the box/packet is unlabelled was it a testpack from somewhere, and hence not in your list above?! I was wondering about the Kentmere Fineprint Warmtone in your list as I have a box of 'old-stock' which I haven't tried yet, but that one is a bit glossy. Was there ever a matt version? And the Kentmere Bromide wasn't the right colour for your mystery I think.

No, it wasn't a test packet, just some left over scraps I used for some 4x5 prints (print size is actually going to be 4x4 in an 8x10 frame, 6x6 in 11x14 frame. I had 24 prints to make for a show and very little paper, and no money for frames, so I went with the small - intimate look. pics from Maine - Monhegan Island.

I think Kentmere had a Finegrain, but I never tried it. I guess I will just have to get some 5x7 small packages and try them out again. I also like the new Ilford Art but would be great without the texture as an alternative. What I really need is some hot - press paper and coat my own, as someone (photo engineer) said in another thread.

Thanks again!

Dorothy, I hope all is well.

Is there any chance that it was Agfa MCC 112?

I have Agfa MCC 111 (Glossy) and it has a cream base.
