Pretty sure it's as you've said some sort of lamphouse. I had a ancient projection microscope, university surplus, had carbon arc light with a wound spring clock like drive that would slowly advance the electrodes for the lamp. I never had the nerve to plug it in.

There was even a chamber that would hold a glass miniature "aquarium like" cell to observe living creatures.

I thought it might have been used to demonstrate to a small class in a darkened room.

$100 digicam will do this today. Boring.

Of course it's probably something else entirely
