A bastard of an Apugger gave me 3 sheets of 8x10 Cot 320 to try out yesterday and this is a beautiful paper so now I have to buy some--which is why I am calling his parentage into question

Now the crux of the matter is that this stuff is so dang expensive! I have read here on Apug and on the alt process list that Cot 320 and Arches Platine are very similar papers and wanted to know how true this is with a pointed question.

The reason is that it will cost me $5.26/sheet for 20x24 of Cot 320 or I can pay $4.25/sheet for 22x30 Platine. This doesn't work out to be too much individually but at buying 25 to 50 sheets this comes out to be a big enough savings for me to make it worthwhile, not to mention that I get an extra 180 sq in/sheet with the Platine which leaves me with 16,500 sq in for $106.25 as opposed to only 12,000 sq in for $131.50 (sq in don't mean much to most, but as most of my images are small I can be very creative with my paper usage). That $25 in savings (not to mention having more paper area so the savings are larger) will be $25 more for metal, FO, or tuition money.

I like Arches better than COT. IMO Arches is smoother than COT and the emulsion does not seem to seep as much in Arches as it does in COT. Mateo has been sizing Arches which apparently gives him even better results. If you liked COT, you wont be disappointed with Arches.

Jeremy, I'm no pro at it yet but I've been printing on both side by side all along now and truth be told other than a smoother surface(very slghtly) I've had better luck with the Platine. It seems to handle mistakes in applying the emulsion better. even though I hate the arrogance of the watermark embedded in the paer next time I buy a batch it will probably be the Platine. I'm just using the watermarked areas for tests. Anyway as I said I am not a genius at this Plat/pall so my opinion may be premature.

Oh Fine!!! As the Appugger with his parentage being called into question  you get back at me by having these people who's opinion I respect start talking about some other paper that neither of us have used...

So now I will have to find some Arches to try...oh well if it wasn't a fun adventure who would ever go down this road...

Thanks Guys....BTW I warned you about the COT320 Jeremy...

I like the COT too, but have never tried the Arches. I wish my 11x14 COT would arrive soon!

I love COT320 which i've been getting from artcraft chemicals..where are you guys getting your arches platine from? Bostick & Sulivan? after what you've been saying, i guess i'm going to have to try it...i primarily use COT320 for palladium prints (but recently tried some salt prints on stonehenge rising and liked the look of them and so was going to try that on COT320 too).

Andrew,

You can purchase Platine from Daniel Smith or NY Art Central, both of which are on the web.

You can also purchase Cot 320 from Art Craft for a few cents less than from B&S.

Good luck,

I agree with Jorge here. The Platine is slightly smoother and doesn't have quite as pronounced dry down as Cot 320.

My 2 cents,

Jeremy,

FYI, the little green house print I sent you was made on Cot 320 but yeah Platine is cheaper.

I do know that some folks have reported having inconsistent batches with the Platine but luckily I've never got any.

And oh yes I still owe you $12.00. The check will go out this week.

Hi

Bergger COt320 and Arches platine are both made by Arches. It seems that arches midified a little the Arches platine Way of making to create the Cot 320 for Bergger. The cot 320 has an added sizing and I find it a little more pressed. I use a lot of both and I prefer to have Arches in my hands. But cot 320 is also really good.

For fine paper you can also look at http://talasonline.com/ , they sell arches, Buxton, Fabriano, zerkall and some more.

Just sent in my order for 25 sheets of Platine--is this a good candidate for an oxalic acid dip or not?

I dont pre treat it, but like I said Mateo is doing the acid pre treatment and sizing before printing and said he liked the resilts better. You might want to try and see.

acid bath... sizing--too many steps, arg! (in the imitation of your best zombie voice)

Last night I tried some gum over on oxalic treated Fabriano Aristico and untreated. Both gave me the same pd print (so I won't be treating it anymore), but I also tried NOT gelatin sizing them and every single one was dichromate stained to hell (the final prints were all-over orange) so I will have to size those.

edit: yes, this last part is COMPLETELY irrelevant, but I felt like sharing

Hello

My advice with Arches platine is that it gives me better resulr with long brush coating . the paper is tougher compare to Crane cover and caoting may be longer..

Clay, Zerkall make a lot of paper and I don't knwo them all. 5 years ago , I have work with ENE Zerkall , Etching 7318 ,zerkall litho402.
The ENE is really smooth.

I never try the Book which is a internally sized with starch and nrutrally sized with aquapel. Zerkall is quite hard to find in france , I had a retailer 5 years ago , but no more.

I've got one of his prints also, absolutely beautiful. It was more than just the paper but the subject matter combined with his process worked really well together.
