Convertable Lens

There are many Pro's and Con's on these lens , But in my situation is the least expensive way to go [I think!]:confused: I just purchased a F5.6/210 & F12/370 Schneider Symmar lens With Iris. The Iris has two scales one for the 210mm and one for the 370mm: Now If Have looked properly the shutters like Copal #1 have a shutter and Iris: Newbie make presumption's?
Now where or how can I get a straight shutter for this lens set up: without brake-ing the wallet: I have look at all the shutters I can find the Copal #1

Your least expensive way to get a shutter for this lens is to use a Packard behind-the-lens shutter. You may have to build a custom domed lensboard, because that lens of yours has an element behind the mounting ring.

It's usually possible to find a cheap lens in Compur #1 for far less than the price of a shutter alone.

Look for a Tessar (or any kind of tessar-type) 150mm f:4.5, or 6" f:4.5, or something like that.

Or an old speed Graphic with working focal-plane shutter.

The Symmar 210/370 convertible is not an unusual or expensive lens in shutter--around $300 usually in a Compur 1 or similar shutter. I'd sell this one to someone who wants to use it on a Speed Graphic or Graflex with a focal plane shutter and look for one in a shutter rather than trying to convert it, which will be more expensive.

Be aware that you need a lot of bellows to use the 370mm cell--on the order of 20", because it is used behind the diaphragm, and that it's not that sharp unless you stop it down at least two or three stops. Think of it as an "interesting portrait lens." The combined 210mm lens, though, is a very nice lens and an excellent value.

David has a good point here - one of the "usual sources" for good Compur #1 shutters are Symmar 210/5.6 Symmars...

The converted lens can be wonderful, but as always with the caveat "for the right subject". On 5x7" I would stop down to at least f:32 if I wanted to avoid "squiggles" in the corners on colour film. There's quite a bit of chromatic aberrations out there - I believe I've posted some examples from a 150/5.6 Symmar converted on 4x5" colour film on this forum sometime in the past?

Thanks for your info on this matter, I got lucky and bought an old AGC Shutter with blank iris plate but it has T-B-1/100sec speed Looks like it had very little use , It has that weird symbol of a Circle and the letters of AGC with what looks like a Triple prop: both lens fit nicely in it :Thanks Lauren
