Contax G 21mm without viewfinder attachment

Is the external viewfinder really necessary? I hear with the G bodies, and the 21mm attached the internal viewfinder defaults to 28mm.
 
it is not necessary, the camera will switch to 28 mm. I recently used it without the viewfinder, just visualized a bit wider than the 28mm I could see through the finder.

Good to know, i could always use a cheaper third party external finder too, right?
 
Yup, you can also make your own. Cut out a 36x24 mm rectangle and hold it 21 mm in front of your eye... or just double the measurements, should work the same
