The Canadian Consulates in both New York and Detroit just told me: If you do not have a current U.S. Passport or an official copy of a birth certificate; do not attempt to enter into Canada !

My problem is that I have yet to receive my re-newed U.S. Passport and the Canadians will not accept of photo copy of my expired U.S. Passport. So, are
registration refunds being offered for those of us who are not able to enter Canada?

I'm presuming that you are a US citizen? At the moment you don't need a passport to enter Canada, bring some photo ID and your birth certificate and you should be fine. It certainly wouldn't hurt to bring your US passport, even though its expired. Just explain that you have not received the new one if you're asked.

Here is the official scoop:

Another thought, you'll probably have much more difficulty getting back into the US without proper documents, than you will entering Canada. I've seen people get turned away at the US border who were driving cars with US plates and they has US drivers licences, but that's all. They had no papers that could prove their citizenship, and a drivers liscence does not prove citizenship.

What happened to the days when all you needed was a birth certificate or driver's license ? I wonder if the Cdn consulates are doing this to save you the hassles you may encounter upon returning to the states with old documents. I wouldn't give up yet, your passport may still show up.

Personally speaking, the last time I drove to the states, I needed two pieces of photo id. One was my driver's license and the other was an expired passport I keep in my camera bag at all times. I specifically asked the US border official about using expired passports and he said it was fine.

Indeed, when I flew to New Orleans last Sept, again I had an expired passport (forgot current one in rush to leave) and had no problems with US Customs officials. Again, two pieces of photo id was all I had to produce.

Yes, I am a U.S. citizen but I do not have my birth certificate. Given my age and circumstances, proving where and when I was born will be even more difficult than having my passport re-newed.

Do you have a driver's license ? Do you have your expired passport ? Do you have any other type of photo id ? If you have none of the above, then you may well be SOL. You still have several weeks so don't sweat it too much until then.

Just a last thought, do oyu have any paperwork that proves you are a US citizen ? This could be very useful.

Both consulates told me that Canadian customs will not accept my photo copy of my expired U.S. passport and renewal application.

Unless things have changed since 2003, I agree with the poster above, your bigger concern is getting back into the US. My wife and I went to Canada in 2003 and had absolutely no problem getting into Canada, but the US immigration guy at the Montreal airport really gave us a hard time about getting back in. We had voting registration info, someone had told us that it would work as proof of citizenship, but he didn't like it one bit. He did let us in after basically humiliating us for a few minutes, but I would personally never take that chance again.

Theoretically, an expired passport still shows that you are a citizen, but I would also be worried about it in the current climate.

Have you tried the court house in the town where you were born? (Assuming you were born in the US) I was able to get a certified copy of my birth certificate very quickly that way.

Good luck,

Paul.

My last passport renewal 4 years ago took all of 7 days to receive. They quote you up to a 2 to 3 week delay, but It usually takes a lot less. I would go for the renewal right now. In fact you can pay them a bit extra and they will expidite it and you can get it in less than 4 days. There are options for this.

It only took me 3 weeks to get my passport back in November. I would bet you'll have it before the conference if you've already sent in the renewal forms.

I can tell you from personal experience that if you go right now, before the weekend, you will almost certainly be able to get your passport renewed. You still have time, but do not delay any longer than Friday to file your paperwork. By the way, I would pay the extra amount to get it expedited, just to be on the safe side.

Take your expired one with you. You only need it to return to the US, not to get into Canada.

I mailed my passport renewal application on March 24, 2006, and my check has since been cashed by the U.S. State Department.

When I spoke with the Canadian Consulate officials, I also inquired of the Canadian Consulate in New York as to using my current photo drivers' license as proof of U.S. citizenship. In this regard, I was also told that a U.S. driver's license is not accepted as proof of U.S. citizenship.

They were correct, a drivers lic is not proof of citizenship, but an expired passport can still be used as proof of citizenship in conjunction with a valid drivers lic. But that said, I would imagine you will have your passport in plenty of time to attend the conference.

Sounds like there's even more misinformation runarounds going on. I'm about to go on a trip to the States in a couple of weeks, and I've been told several different stories regarding required ID for travelling back and forth between the US and Canada. The official story according the passport Canada is that a passport isn't required until the end of this year. We are SUPPOSED to be able to get across the border still with a Drivers License or other government issued photo ID. However, many airlines have started requiring your passport # in the process of ordering your tickets, and I've been told by some travel agencies that Customs is already starting to get REALLY anal about ID, not accepting even the kinds of ID that passport canada claimes is still acceptable.

Now, mind you, I just traveled to the US back in december, and all I needed was my birth certificate to get across the border and back, but there's been a lot of governmental bitching since then. Cross your fingers and hope like hell your passport comes.

It takes quite a while to get a passport renewed in the US. I applied for renewal Feb 7th and received the new one about a week or so ago, first week April. There is a rush process, but I am not sure of the additional cost or time required.

Robert (Flauvius), if you would just plan a head you wouldn't be in this pickel. This is your Mother speaking.

I didn't understand why at the age of 66 the Fed wouldn't just let me use the picture of me when I was 19 on my expired passport.

We had an event loosely referred to as 911. Frankly I thought that was the Porsche that came after the good ones, but folks in Manhattan seem to disagree.

I was in the air en route to Orlando when that happened and I'm glad the authorities allowed the jet I was in full of special needs children, to continue to DW. Didn't see much of Disney from a train heading north to Penn Station after I left the group that morning.

Still, in spite of the differences between our two countries, one would think that ease of travel, with some security measures, would be in both country's interests. Border towns on both sides of the 49th are going to take a hit and the only people who will make money will be the passport offices and passport photo shops.

As for passport renewals, I prefer to wait in line and get it with the one week or so turnaround.

I renewed my passport last year. It took about three weeks to turn the renewal around. If you've been waiting since March 24, I suspect you may not have to wait much longer, so don't despair.

The US Goverment has proposed requiring that everyone crossing the border from Canada to the US have a passport starting (I think) late next year. This is a controversial proposal, not because of those who are flying between major cities in the US and Canada, but because of the inconvenience and potential economic disruption for the folks who live near the border and drive across as part of their day to day activities. Many of those folks haven't traveled more than 50 miles from their place of birth and have never had a passport. The Canadians have been opposed to this proposed policy. Years ago, I was visiting International Falls, MN, and for lunch my client chose to drive across the border to a restaurant in Fort Francis, ONT.

But as far as I know, the new requirements have not formally taken effect yet. That said, if the Canadian consulate says you need a passport to get into Canada, then you need a passport. The consulate speaks for the Government of Canada. I don't know what is going on there - it could be an administrative policy to demonstrate the problem that requiring passports would have in those border regions. But what is clear is that if there is a new requirement that you must have a passport, it is because the Bush administration proposed that requirement.

I've traveled to Canada many times on business. When flying, I have always used a passport - it's one of the permanent fixtures in my briefcase. Two weeks ago today, for the first time in many years, my wife and I drove to Canada. We both had passports, and the experience getting into Canada was a non-event. We had to wait longer to talk to the customs/immigration officer than we actually spent talking to her.

Returning to the US three days later was a different story. First, the line was much longer, and moved much more slowly. And the homeland security guy (he was doing his job - no complaints about that) seemed to feel that there was something sinister about our desire to drive through the backwoods of Vermont on a beautiful Sunday morning rather than come down the boring Adirondack Northway. But it was worth the hassle - we had a delightful lunch at the Dog Team in Middlebury, a restaurant we last visited more than 30 years ago.
