I haven't used that lens but it was designed to be used with 6x6cm to 4x5" images. Where did you get the idea that it would work with 8x10" film? The original suggested price was $660 -- probably around $2,000 in today's dollars. For that price, you can buy a separate lens for each format from 6x6cm to 8x10' -- AND POCKET SOME CHANGE FOR FILM!!!

and probably get better optical performance from fixed-focal vs a zoom lens

This was probably designed for production environments that needed to be able to switch back and forth efficiently between relatively large medium format negatives ~ 6x9 to 4x5 negatives.
For that reason, I would expect them to be quite high quality.
