I am really struggling to replace the torsion springs in my 1970 35mm film cameras. They slip and slide all over the place. I have used needle-nose pliers and tweezers to no avail. Is there a method? What are the best tools? Thank you for your advice.

I've had luck bending pieces of stripped solid core wire (or bus wire, electronic component leads, resistors, etc.) into loops/hooks to set the springs properly.

..oh, and patience.

HI, I have not yet tried to create a spring. - just want to work out the technique or tools for replacing pre-existing springs. Yes, patience is required. But, for me, this was beginning to wear after 90 minutes with one spring. Time for a cup of tea?

I'm not suggesting that you create springs. I'm suggesting that you make 'tools' (hooks and loops) out of solid core wire to manipulate the springs you are trying to replace. I suppose you can also bend something like a paperclip into something usable.

You can bend wire/paper clips to make something like this:

I hope this helps..

I have now received my spring hooks - still need patience, but what a positive difference! Thank you Jmczaja!

I only got one such tool, bought in the eighties, consisting of the two tips at the right of the photo linked to above.

You have it about torsion and compression springs. I see not mush use in such tools on them, but instead I rather would use tiny pliers on them.

Those special tools are good though for pull-springs.
