Composing for 6x7 on a Fuji GW690

I really want a Fuji GW670 but they are few and far between.

I know I can get a GW690 pretty easily and crop to 6x7, but I'd really rather compose in 6x7.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe I could mask the rangefinder with transparent tape and then I'd have some faint guidelines but not lose the out-of-frame portion of the viewfinder....

Any ideas?

$765 gets you a mint GW670 on Ebay right now. That's your solution. I dont think you can fudge a 6 x 9 into a 6 x 7 in anyway that will be satisfactory.

Welcome to Photrio.
For years I worked with 6x6 cameras, when the end product was 4x5, 5x7 or 8x10.
I did use a grid screen, but it wasn't scribed to indicate any particular aspect ratio.
For me, it wasn't all that difficult to envision the necessary frame lines and then just take photographs.
Mostly I photographed people. It might have been different if I was doing something that required higher precision.

If you can get at the focusing screen, you could put small dots on the corners of the 6x7 area.
But before you do anything like that, do you shoot 35mm cameras and print to a 4x5 aspect ratio? If so, it is the same thing.

I shoot in 4x3 aspect ratio and crop to 6x7 often. I used to have an RB67 and I loved that thing, but its just too big for how I work.

You can make a mask but the camera's still going to advance the 9CM.

If you like 6x7cm because of its similarity to 4x5", the actual image made by the Fuji 690, when scaled up, would be 4x5.8" so it is not as far off as one would think.

The finder lines show a 92% view. So, if you use the top and bottom of the viewfinder image and the two sides of the frame lines to compose, you will have a rough approximation.



The viewfinder on any camera is just an approximation anyway. If you are serious about composition you might look into something like a Horseman VH which has ground glass composing ($250 ebay).

Hey, thanks for that graphic that's really helpful!

Ground glass composing is a dream. I do miss that about the RB67.
