I have a TMY negative which needs about N-4 development. How much time should I give it in a semi-stand tube? My time for a normal TMY negative is about 11.5 minutes in a tray, 36 minutes semi-stand. (in Pyrocat HD 1:1:50 and 1:1:175, respectively.)

I'm afraid that if I back off too much on development I'll get uneven development.

What process do you plan to use to print these negatives? If for printing on VC papers my tests indicate you probably need to reduce time with semi-stand development to about ten minutes for N-3 or SBR of 10. Anything below that is unchartered waters for me.

Jim,

I wouldn't go more dilute than 1 - 175. I would use Semi-Stand, only one agitation in the middle rather than 3 or 4. Mid way agitation at only 15 secs.

Most of all I would lower the chemistry temperature down to about 66 degrees allowing for around a total time of 16-20 mins.

Usually with high contrast scenes micro contrast does not have to be enhanced, therefore if you compress the neg too much you can always use a higher contrast paper.

On the other hand, the Amidol water bath is an extraordinary tool for the wet process photog. whose negs might be too contrasty.

All best, Steve

Sandy:

I'm going to print them either on Azo or its enlarging paper moral equivalent, Kentmere Kentona.

Thanks, Maestro. I'll give it a shot.
