Commerical printers for Alternative Processes

Are there any commercial printers specializing in alternative processes, I'd like to have some of my negatives printed.

I'm considering trying some processes myself but would like to see the results in my hand before I get involved though, I'm embarrassed to say that for most processes I've never actually held a print in my hand. Just books and websites which are not ideal.

UK preferred for shipping reasons but worldwide would be ok.

Any ideas?

Elevator may do some of what you are looking for and Bob Carnie could certianly produce a print you could use as a benchmark.

Gum, Platinum, Cyanotype and Argyrotypes would be my favourites but like I said, I've never actually held prints in my hands.

5x4 is my largest format at the moment so naturally thats far from ideal and I'd have to explore something more suitable if I got bitten by the bug.

I second Heather's suggestion. If all that you need is to have a few prints to look at and compare against each other, I'm sure there are a lot of APUG folks who would be glad to send you samples of different types of prints. I can send you examples of gum dichromate, cyanotype, van dyke brown, salted paper, or albumen prints made from 4x5 negatives. I also agree that looking at examples from books and websites do not at all give a concrete idea of how each type of print really looks like. Nothing like seeing them first hand. Well, I'm going to shill for Bill Schwab a bit here. Every now and then Bill offers up a PT/PD print for like $100. I honestly use his prints as the measure to which I want to reach. I don't know when his next offering is but you can contact him here or through his website: http://www.billschwab.com/

I also like Heather's idea. There are some fantastic alternative process printers here and I have been fortunate to participate in so many exchanges and receive so many gorgeous prints.

Some good suggestions there and some very generous ones, thanks very much.

I don't think there is any point in me taking part in any exchanges as this point and I really don't want to take anyones prints for free, photography is expensive enough on people without mailing free prints to others.

I'll mull this over for a while.....

It just struck me that some knowledgeable member could collate from all you guys a travelling portfolio showing most alternative processes for people like myself to see.

Also I wonder if Sean could create a list of members that will print for a fee, naturally noting the techniques and processes that each person provides.

Fintan,
Luca Paradisi, a platinum printer in Ireland, prints for other photographers although it's not mentioned on his websites, Dead Link Removed and http://www.fineartplatinum.com.
