the European Council has installed the regulation that an international bank transfer cannot cost more than a national one; hence nearly every bank decided to charge nothing for fear of losing their customers. Maybe an idea worth following?

The trouble with a Central or Federal government passing regulations as to what a bank may or may not charge is that they will then look for other revenue streams. Here in the US, the Government severely lowered the maximum fees that could be collected each time a customer used their debit/check card at a store. Consequently Bank of America, and others, announced they were going to charge their customers about $5 a month to use their debit (check) card. This caused a huge uproar and legislation was introduced to prohibit or reduce the maximum fee. Because customers became so upset just about all the banks rescinded the new fee program.

The end result was the same except that it was the customers who caused the banks to back down as opposed to the government.

That's what I can no longer do-go to the bank branch whose address appears on the check, and cash it. Some local banks do allow it, though.

Here in the States, most checks only have the name of the bank on them and do not show any address at all. I don't care for the practice but, with all the account records being centralized, one branch is basically the same as any other branch of the same bank. There is no need to go the precise branch where the customer has their account.

My BofA checks have my local branch on them-though it's been so long since I ordered more I don't know if it's still their practice.

...a quick jump back to the topic of shipping:

Last week I bought a batch of films from a US APUG member. The package was posted on the 28th of October using the cheapest option possible: USPS International, not signed, not tracked. It arrived in my local post office (Athens, Greece) on the 2nd of November, fast as lightning.

I have bought lots of stuff from APUG's Classifieds forum and there never was any trouble when using USPS, no customs, no extra charge, no lost packages.

Oh ya there was one thing I forgot to mention. The friend that was doing her thesis, she's American and her Phd is from an American University. Both she and her husband have Phd's in economics from US universities. So for all you who thought is was a Canuck crapping on the US banks, well ,,,, see you at an OSW protest.

I like Wall Street. My whole retirement portfolio and my much of employers endowment is there, why would I protest it or want any harm to come to Wall Street ever? The same is true of most Americans that work hard and save (not those seeking handouts).

As far as the indigenous American-hating left in universities is concerned, that's nothing new. I used to go to cocktail parties in Cambridge Massachusetts back in the 80's where it was drolly and routinely explained to me by these elite academic leftists types that America and the Soviet Union were equally evil (that was well before the populace there overthrew their oppressors and the Berlin came down).

That's OK Eric. We don't mind you poking good natured fun. I don't really think of Canada as being another country. If it weren't for your weird postal codes you'd be just like another state! Just kidding. :alien: Isn't this forum all aboot having some fun eh?

Just because someone points out a flaw in an American system does not mean they "hate" America.

Really

Anyone making the slightest critiscism is a Socialist or a commie. It was amazing seeing the banter between extremes in the US posting here and on the LF forum last US Presidential elections. But us Brit's give out the best with a leading newspaper calling a President "a little French Pigmy"

The days of Democracy versus Communism are over, now we have the axis of Fundementalism led again by the US on one side and now Iran on the other.

I hope this is not going to turn into a bitter political discussion. Up till now the discourse has been positive. However, I am sensing that this could change quite fast. I'm not sure if I have the ability to terminate a thread but, if I do, I will close it down if comments become acrimonious.

Thanks!
