Hehe, ok, cheap is relative, I mean compared to new. Must be some meters from the 80's-90's floating around, and with digital imaging largely taking over there must be some people on here who have resorted to shooting film for personal stuff and digital for proffesional stuff (as you seldom need a color meter these days, except if you're very anal about color), hence there might be someone willing to sell a meter in working but ugly condition for a nice price. Compare to LF, ten-fifteen years ago nobody would have expected the price levels we see today in big sinar and arca-swiss kits. Same with a lot of other cameras and related gear. I bought a minolta IV meter for less than $70, there must be color meters of the same vintage with the same relative price drop, although not that many.

I bought an 80's vintage Minolta color meter II recently and had to pay $200 for it, plus an extra $150 to have it properly calibrated.

That's somewhat the budget I'd be looking at.

I found mine for about $200, and it seems well calibrated. Took me about a year of waiting for a good one at a good price on eBay. I found it works well for checking florescent light bulbs and LEDs too, so maybe it's not just photographers buying them up. Good luck.
