Hi All,

I have an opportunity to pick up a Colorstar 5000 exposure analyser. I'm wondering is this device is worth picking up for color printing? I'm currently using nothing to calibrate prints and I'm relying upon trial and error.

If it is advisable to pick up the analyser, there is the caveat that is it no instruction manual and the person that has the analyser doesn't know how to operate it. Is there a manual available on-line or otherwise?

Colorstar or Colorline?

Only time I've heard mention of a Colorstar 5000 was here.

If it's a colorline then the Jobo website might still have a manual online.

Any chance it's a 3000 or 6000 Colorstar?

Like anything else it depends on price and if it works.

Well, it says Colostar 5000 on the unit and doesn't indicate it was manufactured by JOBO. It's definitely not a 3000 or 6000 series.

The "ColorStar" and "Colorline" (I have three ColorStar 3000s) were manufactured for JOBO by Lici in the Netherlands.

JOBO products are now distributed by Omega-Satter - your best bet is to contact them:
[ www.omegasatter.com ]. From there, select "JOBO" at the left; then "Analog"; then "Timers/ Analyzers".
Go to Omega-Satter's home page to talk to them. Good people!

I remember a "5000" - I think it was a "ColorLine" - but take that as having a confidence level of 50% - equal probability of being either wrong or right.

Lici is now manufacturing the ColorLine 7000 as well as 3000s.

Go to 'Articles'

There you will find a 3-part article by Frances Schultz from 'Darkroom User' magazine. Many (including Lici themselves, if we remember right) reckoned this was a better guide to the Colorstar than their own instruction book...

While I don't think anybody has said so in as many words but no doubt you have gathered this from the replies - YES the colourstar is most certainly worth having for analysing.

Once set up it is a very versatile analyser. The Frances Schultz articles are very instructive as you will have found if you have already looked them up. If not then I'd certainly do so.

The problem is have any of us used the Colorstar 5000 or even seen one? I haven't. Other then the one or thread on it on this forum I don't think any body has even mentioned it.

Nick. Hopefully the thread originator will look at the Lici site and the F Schultz articles and be able to decide if his analyser matches the 3000.

If it doesn't then, I agree we need to know a lot more.

It's definitely a ColorSTAR 5000 and says so on the unit. It's possible the ColorLINE and the ColorSTAR are the same unit with different names.

I'll try the sites suggested and if I get the unit I'll PM Lopaka for a copy of the instructions.Thanks everyone for your input.

VERY correct information.
LiCi went bankrupted in the Netherlands around 2003. Another division was saved and developed spectrum photometers for the labority industry.

If you want to buy an actual AND supported color analyser I can recommend you the FEM-Kunze (former Wallner) CFL-4012. Great equipment and still 100% supported from Fischach, Germany.

I guess that's why Lici doesn't answer their emails :rolleyes: What does this mean with Omega selling units? Are they selling just old stock?

Yes, the analysers are not produced anymore since 2003.

But the whole market in color analysers is very low, last year only a few FEM-Kunze analysers.....
