Hi,

I am just going to send this link to those who may be interested in Collotype.

I had an opportunity to work with Benrido, a collotype studio in Kyoto, and they are making some prints for me. As you know, they usually use a press to make collotypes, but here they are making hand impressions. We are hoping to bring them for a demonstration or workshop at our studio next year.

We also hope to show a video clip of the entire process soon. I will let you know once it is up.

thanks, for posting. i'm very interested in collotype. but unfortunately i don't speak chinese (or japanese. please pardon my ignorance). is there something similar available in english?

Collotype is a photo mechanical process where you create a plate from gelatin (with dichromate) on a piece of glass. It creates true continuous tone, and it can pick up very subtle details and nuances of the originals.

This was very popular process in the early 1900s before the offset printing become more dominant in printing industry. Berido is quite often commissioned by Japanese government to create copies of old paintings.

Is there a good book on making collotypes? Can this be done in a home darkroom/studio environment, or is it too complicated to do on a small scale?
