I have mentioned this as a 'screw up' but was wondering if anyone has any idea why. Three different black and white films in three different tanks. Some rather out of date Ilfosol developer, stop bath and rapid fixer. All a bit old.

All three films have nothing left on them. No sign of frame edges, noting, except uper the bit of tape at the end of the two 120 films.

All camera test runs so nothing important lost, but it is the first time I have seen this is 50+ years of home processing, and I have used some pretty dodgy chemicals in the past. I think I got spoilt by a bottle of Rodinal I had before the Ilfosol, it lasted for years of non use. Anyhow new bottle has now been orderd, of Rodinal the military formulae.

Ilfosol has a notoriously short shelf life. If it was brown when you poured it out of the bottle, I would suspect that as the culprit.

Was this Ilfosol S or Ilfosol 3? AFAIK the S had big issues with shelf life, the 3 seems to be better in this regard.

PS: You can coarsely test whether your developer works by immersing a small test clip of random film and watching it develop in broad daylight. If this clip doesn't turn black within very few minutes, your developer is dead. Unless things are waaay insane, there should be no way that stop bath and fixer kill your film, so blank film typically means dead developer. Care to tell us which film you used?

For clarity, if your developer doesn't develop, stop bath will do nothing and fixer will do a fine job of fixing away everything, leaving everything blank.

Thanks for those replies. Obviously it was the Ilfosol.

Well the replacement Rodinal arrived less than 24 hours after being ordered on line. Isn't the internet wonderful.
