Hello Folks, I'm trying to get to Harry Taylor's "Classic Enlargers" page, but I keep getting 404s. I was able to get there a week or so ago, but not now?

Anything up?

Tnx,

-- Mark

I had a google and presume you mean www.classic-enlargers.com ... if so, it appears to either have been hijacked or there's a DNS problem or maybe the domain registration ran out and it's been bought by someone else, as the site is just a typical placeholder full of garbage

That site has been archived to 2nd level, if that may help to same extend.

Harry seemed to have stopped answering posts on his help forum about 6 months ago then cam back for a couple of posts a few months back and nothing after that.
I think his son used to help him manage the web site.
I think his site was a good resource so I hope it stays available.

What does "archived to 2nd level" mean? Are past responses available somewhere and, if so, where? Harry's site has been a valuable resource for Omega enlarger owners and it would be wonderful if it's still available, even if no further questions are posted or answered.

Sorry, but I do not know the right technical term. Maybe mine is appropriate anyway. I mean that in the archived versions as far as I tried one can follow one link further into that website successfully, but links at that new level are inoperative.

you can view the archived-footage through the way back machine ( mr peabody and sherman area not needed for this operation )
(archive.org) just type in the web address ( http://www.classic-enlargers.com ) and you can see what has been "snapshotted" ...

happy waybacking

Unfortunately it doesn't work for me; all I can see isn chart showing when things were archiuved, but I can't get to the actual archives :-(

You should see a calendar for 2014, you can change the year from the chart above the calendar.
On the calendar there are dates in a blue circle that indicate which days the site was archived on; there is only one date in 2014 and 2 in 2013 though.
Click a date with a blue circle on it and it should take you to the archive for that date.

Oh, I see. I looks like for some years only the home pages are archived; for others the topics can be found, but the actual answers aren't there so it's pretty much useless. Too bad!

Hijacked website

Hi all - I'm Classic Enlarger's daughter. His website has apparently been taken over by someone, without our knowledge. We are checking into this, and he will be back as soon as possible. Thanks to whoever emailed him about this issue. And thanks for your patience!

Claire

Harry has had a few health issues - he's an old dude, after all!
His son used to manage it for him, but he passed away.
We will do all we can to keep his site and his analogue legacy available.

Thanks!

Please send Harry my best wishes. I bought my Omega D-II, which he referred to as a "D Roman Numeral Two" to distinguish it from the more modern D2, from Harry many years ago, probably around 1990. I still have and use this old beast today. I'll never get rid of it.

That's great to hear! He does good work - and loves what he does.

Thank you Claire; that's good news about your father. I hope it isn't too much of a hassle to get the site up and running again.

BTW, when you enter "http://classic-enlargers.com" in your browser you get a new blog called "A Geek & a Dreamer" that appears to have been started by a couple of school girls. If you click on any of their recent posts you can leave a comment. I wrote "shame on you for hijacking Harry Taylor's Classic Enlarger blog." I'd suggest that others comment in a similar vein.

Thank you Claire.

Your father's site has been a great help to me and many others here.

If there is anything we can do to help, please feel free to ask.

You and your father are welcome here on APUG any time.

I'm sure "the Canadians" (KHB Photographix) would echo the sentiment .

Thanks everyone! It is really very touching to see how much my dad means to you all.

I like the guerilla action by Bob Marvin too!

We have notified the host of his website - hopefully this isn't a lost cause. I'll keep you up to date.

RE: my "guerilla" action; the new blog appears to be run by a couple of middle-school girls. It's actually sort of charming, when you don't consider the damage they've done, perhaps unknowingly. If you decide to comment, please be as gentle as possible. One of their posts shows their photographs (which IMO are rather good). That might be the best place for comments and (I hope) gentle rebukes. I've already posted this, as a comment on their entry called “photo-SHOE-t”:

"These are pretty good photographs, but, if you love photography, why on earth did you hijack an established and valued photography website? Perhaps you did this unknowingly and aren’t aware of the damage you’ve caused? If so, have a look at this thread, on APUG, the Analog Photography Users Group; especially the last few entries:

i hadn't talked to mr taylor in years ( since i bought my E3 )
he's doing well, and still has LOTS of enlargers to sell ( that he has
refurbished or is the process of refurbishing ) ... not only omegas
but other things as well.

so if you are enlarger-less and need/want one, send him an email or give him a call!

(he also makes the rails, and has cones for auto focus-stuff )

There's even a recent (5/22) answer from Harry; good news!

When I bought my Omega B8 several years ago I got lots of valuable advise from Harry and was able to buy some missing parts (a 6 X 9 negative carrier and a lens cone for a 105mm lens, among other things.

Hi everyone

Turns out the site takeover was a mistake made by the host server. We forgive him!

Classic-enlarger.com is back up and running.

If you ever experience problems with the site, please send me a message, and we will sort it out.

One nice side-effect of this is discovering how much my dad is appreciated in the photography world.

Thanks everyone - your response has warmed our hearts!

And yes, he has lots to sell - so please contact Harry.

We daughters would like to help him clear out the house a bit!

:D

Thanks for the promotion!
He isn't as busy these days, but still has the passion, and rebuilds by hand.

Dad's 90 now, and still going strong!

Good news to hear you dad and his website are back.
