Cirkuts, anyone?

In a separate (there was a url link here which no longer exists), fellow Cirkuteer Len Robertson and I have been welcoming Jim Galli into our midsts. Jim's progressed rapidly through #6, #8, and now is waiting for delivery of his newly purchased #10 Cirkut.

Len and I have warned him that he'll soon be shopping for a #16. Jim swears that won't happen ("I'll make due with the #10"), but Len ("no hope for him"), and I ("doomed") think otherwise.

In the meantime, I was wondering what kind of interest there might be in starting a Cirkut forum, here or elsewhere? I'd appreciate comments and suggestions.

Of course I heartily endorse the idea as I've already benefited from Len's extravagant generosity. It would be great to have a small list of those involved to spread the wealth of knowledge on as Newbie's like myself come on board. It's hard to imagine anything more analog than a Cirkut Camera.

Hope that 10 (I bought Thursday) has a good strong spring as the 8 left me this morning, and it did.

I think this is the most likely place to start a dedicated forum, the interest generated by Jim and any other potential/curious posters will keep the discussion alive. IAPP's forum has failed to do that and the other forums started since the demise of the original panoramic forum have bombed too. The other forums allow digital which in current times have swamped film based technologies.

This site is only getting bigger so further specialisation makes sense.

I'd like to see more discussion of anything panoramic, Roundshot, Alpa Rotocamera, Widelux, Noblex, Hulcherama.........

have you unloaded the #8 already?...........maybe you could've done some side by side testing to sort out problems with either camera. I have 2 almost identical Roundshots, makes troubleshooting a breeze.

Clayton, the #8 is already enroute to it's new owner. It was necessary to sell it to finance the new #10. It would have been a luxury that I couldn't afford to keep them both. I'll settle for now on a 6 and a 10. Well hey, 6 + 10 is a 16 right? I'll ask Sean about setting up a forum for all things panoramic. Not just Cirkut. A film pano forum should be a lively place.

This is just too cool. I'm not likely to ever own a Cirkut but I'm going to watch this forum anyway. What a fascinating camera and what fascinating photos come out of it.

What a cool form of photography. I was up in the middle of the night and happened upon this thread and spent quite a while perusing the sites listed and then some of the links listed on those sites. I too doubt that I will venture into this type of shooting and camera but I can appreciate the concept and the results and have a great deal of respect for those who follow this discipline. Thanks for posting.

Still standing on the "one shot, one kill" side of the fence, I have questions. Are there environmental concerns with printed Cirkuts? Do you guys have to wear haze-mat suits?

Seriously, I enjoy reading about the adventures on the Cirkut trail, whether as part of the (conventional) LF forum here, or if a dedicated forum is established here. FWIW, I probably wouldn't venture off to a separate domain, however. So, I'd encourage keeping the discussions here.

I gotta ask - how do you evenly develop film that size? Is there such a thing as a reel to wind the film onto - sorta like an old nikor tank for 35mm?

a lot of guys develop in trays, not long trays but deep ones. That's how I was taught to do it. So you hold each end of the film in your hands and run it back and forth in the soup. The tray only needs to be about a foot square and 8 - 10 inches deep. Pays to have about 5 litres of developer in the tray.

Surprisingly development is very even this way, a check with a desitometer proves it.

The downside is you're restricted to a length of film you can hold outstretched arm to arm. Really helps being 6 foot + if you want to handle a decent length.

There are a lot of alternatives, spool to spool aerial processors work.

very interesting... Im of the "mini" panoramic ilk, merely a 7x17. But I think it would be interesting to have a Panoramic Forum. One for all the panoramic formats, 4x10, 5x12, 7x17, 8x20, 617, xpan, cirkut, etc. could be potentially a really interesting thing. If sean is not interested in doing it as a subforum on here then Im more than willing to create a simple forum for it. I already have one setup on my server.


EDIT: I just noticed it got done... Im slow.

Hey Matt. Actually Sean set (there was a url link here which no longer exists) up last evening. And yes, it isn't just for Cirkut folk but any format that is about 2.5:1 or more. Should be fun. There's already quite a bit of discussion going on. Maybe I'll get Sean to move this thread over.

Don't feel bad. You can always do a tryptich with your mini.

Alex, I'm with you: I don't have a Cirkut of my own; but I'm damn tempted to plunk down the $2500 for The #10 Cirkut for sale... Next Door!

By the way, the best I can do for panorama photography is a well-travelled Horizon 202; but one photo from it made it into Dead Link Removed
