Water Street, Tonopah, Nevada. No, that is not earthquake damage. That's what it looked like before and after the temblor. Click on the image for a bigger version. #8 Cirkut Camera. 305mm G-Claron Dagor type lens. Effective 1/12th sec @ f64

That phone pole on the left sort of boogers it a little bit, but I left the chain saw at home. Miss my old version of Photoshop too. I'll need to buy a 'stitching' program I guess. I don't see myself doing wet prints of this stuff. The neg is robust. Aviphot 200 aerial film, 9.5 cut down to 8"

This is a scan, but I will contend it doesn't get any more anal, I mean analog than a Cirkut camera that's well over 100 rears old.

Microsoft ICE is good for stitching, and it is a free download.
Glad you are okay after the earthquake.

Very cool. Are these multiple negatives stitched together? How many? Ive got a panorama tripod head, but I dont think it would work with my 8x10 camera.

No, the Cirkut camera makes one continuous negative. This one is about 47 inches long. So 8 inches high by 47 inches long. I had to scan it in segments and sew it back together best I could. Originally these were contact printed. I don't have the equipment to make contact prints that big, so scanning is the best I can do.

My development method limits the size somewhat. The machine can make a full 360 degree image. This image encompasses about 180 degrees. I use a piece of sewer pipe 47 inches long, so that's my limiting factor. 3" ABS sewer pipe, rolled on a counter top. Pretty primitive, but works very well as long as I'm happy to stop at that length. I have an 8 foot stainless tray upstairs, but that's brutally more work to do, and a lot more chances to screw stuff up.

A positive with a light box behind it would be impactful for sure.

WoW! Looks great! How did you process that piece of film? Vancouver, BC library scanned bunch of Cirkut negatives a few years ago with modified Epson scanner. Negatives were stored in round tubes for last 100+ years
Goran,
I think that it is the Vancouver Archives you are thinking of.
Their Cirkut collection is wonderful. At the Alternative and Traditional Photography Symposium in Vancouver a few years ago we were lucky enough to have a tour and talk.

Be sure to click on the links to make your way into the digitized collections themselves.
Those round tubes are still there.

"This developer mix will develop up to twenty 135-36, 120, or 8x10 -- or four half-circle Cirkut negatives." You know, Jim, my local Big Box store sells that size black ABS pipe in lengths up to twelve feet. Just saying...

They were in the process of upgrading their equipment with a more appropriate scanner when we had our session with them.
The original negatives are a wonder to behold!

Yeah Jim. Let the tube roll down your driveway a few times. :D

Getting the film into and out of the tube is a challenge. I have a roll of christmas wrapping paper I stole from my wife, and, in the dark, I wrap the neg longways around the wrapping paper tube, the tissue like wrapping paper is perfect because it's soft enough not to scratch the emulsion. That gets it in the tube. After the washes, it's well stuck to the inside of the tube and I have to put a pair of pliers on it to break the adhesion on the walls so it will slide out. Yup, 47" is enough. I use a liter of PyroCatHD on each sheet. Total square inches in development is about the same as 5 8X10's in a JOBO. PcatHD seems to be bulletproof. Thanks Sandy.

Go to https://www.tapplastics.com/product/plastics/plastic_rods_tubes_shapes/acrylic_rods/147 and get the 1/8 inch rod, bond it to the inside of the tube making enough ribs for the film to lay on equal distant apart for even support.
This will wash off antihalation coating and make removing the film easier. Increase tube diameter if needed.

Better still, apply the ribs in a helix around the inside of the tube, so you don't have to worry about a film edge sticking "up" too far toward the tube center because of its position on a rib.

Ummm. How to do this is left as an exercise... :whistling:

It might not be broke enough to fix. But thanks for all the nice thoughts. ;~'))

If only more of us were capable of thinking that way.

True, Don, but too many of us think along the lines of: How about making a gang-broach and rifling the insides?

Charley

Guilty as charged, near enough. I was actually thinking how to improvise a lathe for the task. BTW, anyone who's rifled a flintlock can tell you you only need one tooth on the cutter as long as you have a six-position index on the guide bar.

This time the No. 6 Cirkut Outfit with 6 1/2" spool (largest possible in that camera)

Very imperfect and when you click to make it big, they will be readily apparent. The wind was blowing gusts up to 50mph, but the day was so visually compelling I did the best I could with it. This was with a 13 3/4" B&L Protar VII. The negative is robust. If only . . .

Still don't have the stitching software. Been too busy. But I don't mind posting the imperfect versions.

Another Tonopah Historic Mining Park image with the #8 Cirkut that I'm dressing up to offer here for sale. This was done on Saturday before Memorial day. Click it for a bigger version. This one was done using a 45CM APO Tessar lens.

This camera is now posted for sale on ebay if someone wants one of these outfits. Sadly, ALL of my pictures normally posted here have gone missing as the folks who I've paid for 20 years to host my pages have vanished. I haven't been able to communicate with them. No one answers the phone. I fear 20 years of effort, and a valuable resource may be lost. If by chance you want this cirkut outfit, contact me here. You'll have to look at the images there though.

Very sorry to hear this. It's rather cruel on the part of the hosting service provider to shut down shop without giving a notice in advance. I hope you have backed-up the data that was hosted on your website.
