I bought on Fotoimpex a small set of FD (first developer), CD (colour developer) and blix of the Cinestill brand.

I was a bit perplex about the instructions for the FD.

I title this thread with the added "for europeans", because that Cinestill stuff is an american product, so they will obviously see no point in this I guess. Cultural differences....

Anyway the picture of the FD bottle summarizes it:

I have never seen a partial mix of metric and english units like this:

"to make 1 liter ... net content: 16 ounces" ....

either all in one system or all in dual (ml/ounces).
this is not an issue of course, I use a units converter obviously.

more puzzling is the:

"single-use solution develops N rolls"

I searched online and found one Reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AnalogComm...till_e6_kit_says_the_first_developers_should/

as i understand it, in E6, the FD is some specific kind of BW developer.

BW developers are either used one shot, dilution from concentrate (HC-110, Rodinal) or from powder (D76, ...) and the ones that are stock reusable many times (typically 10x) may need to be use with some incremental time to compensate depletion.

but the Cinestill FD instruction isn't clear at all.
Also I compared instructions with the ones of Tetenal E6 and Tetenal instructions were useful at a certain point, but won't go into the details, as attention span is short on Photrio..

also, it is to be used 1+1 by default, with stock and/or different times for pushes. I don't see much point with that, since the key point is metering when taking the picture. If unlucky, post-processing...
So I diluted only half of it, and made 1 liter of the default 1+1. The remaing half repackaged in a smaller container, filled to top so very little air, in order to make another liter.

I guess after couple rolls I will see if further iterations of the FD solution will need some more time.

otherwise it is a convenient set, because FD, CD, blix can be bought separately.

if you were to follow the instuctions you would mix 470ml of water with the contents of the bottle, which if it 16 OZ US (About 473.176 ML) and then top it up to one liter.

that is just a touch less strong than a One part to One part mix.

(16 British Oz would be 454.60 ml. (one of the other problems with old style measures)

yes, but their instructions are that for "normal" development, the stock solution is to be further diluted 1+1. Color developer and blix are mixed to make 1 liter each. So in order to have also 1 liter of "normal" first developer I diluted half the bottle ie. ~ 237ml. Keep the remaining ~237ml to make another liter at 1+1.

their instructions for pushed development by using stock FD, instead of 1+1 for normal development imply that you will always do pushed development. Normal development means a 1+1 dilution, after what you can't un-dilute back to stock. You can't develop say two rolls as normal, then push the next one with a more concrated solution. But then by extended time I guess.
If it was a powder like D76 or a high concentration like HC-110 or Rodinal, then yes you could do one shot to stock, dilution 1+1 dilution or whatever. But this FD isn't one shot.

yes, and in the first place this Cinestill stuff mixes unit systems. It's like you are on a road network where speed limits are in km/h but your car displays miles...

first film i have developed is a 2006 4x5 Astia-100F which was kept refrigerated (old stock I got from a professional). Given the fact that this is a 15 years expired film, I guess it's ok. (metered on the dark tiles of the church)
