I have no intention of getting involved. My friend and neighbor has explained the economics of Cl-HQ to me and I know the difficulty involved in testing the stuff. I would only order from a reputable chemical company myself.

LFA Mason, Photographic Processing Chemistry,p142 notes:
"The use of Phenidone/hydroquinone systems enables higher developing agent concentrations to be used than would be possible with the Metol/hydroquinone system.Substitution of part of the hydroquinone by chlorohydroquinone enables this to be further increased."

That is the only apparently unexplored use of chloroquinone I have found.
There are a few rather ancient looking carbonate sulfite formulae using it on p195 of Developing by Jacobson & Jacobson 18th edition.

Like many other developing agents Chlorohydroquinone went out of use because there were better alternatives, or because of few useful advantages if any over other developing agents.

I can draw up a useful range of developers using various developing agents to give me the various different results I require for film or paper development but none include Chlorohydroquinone.

It's major use was in warm-tone developers and a PQ warm-tone developer will give similar results, a Phenidone-Pyrocatechin developer would (and is) even better.
From memory May & Baker were the last major company to use Chlorohydroquinone commercially in a developer but they made their own.

You're trying to find a use for Chlorohydroquinone rather than trying produce a developer that might have advantages over something published or commercially available. If I had a source for high grade Chlorohydroquinone I would try it but feel the low grade now available is less adavantageous.

I thank all for their input. I will use the 25 grams of Chlorohyroquinone that I received from KennyE. In a formula that I got off line.

I did the best I could in getting the chlorohyroquinone out there and available to all. I thought that I was helping.

To answer your deleted post. Photographic grade varies depending on the chemical and the types of typical impurities so may be higher or lower purity than typical technical or industrial grades. So when you look at Photographic grade specifications their are specific maximum levels of impurities that might have a deleterious effect in the photographic process.

It's obsolete as a developing agent, but, if you really must have it, check the industrial specialty chemical firms. Spectrum lists it at $48 for 25 g and $135.70 for 100 g.

After reading all these posts, I know now why were all so crazy. Its obvious. its "the Mission" impossible. Some people think, (and rightly so) that he/she can improve "the formulae". While some of us, defer to our elders-(those who have come before us, and put 150 years into the chemistry lab) -only to find out that their life work ended in rubbish. so the question is . . . . drum roll. . . . "do I pick up where they left off and continue done this line of experimentation- to find that crazy nitch developer that tweeks an additional 1-20% (be optimistic people) image quality? or realize that there wasn't much at all that, that researched offered and find "magic' elsewhere. Photography will lead you done some roads that will annilate your soul if you are not prudent. ( I am thinking here of advice, by those who say "nay" on the chemical in question) or just waste your time. However the "mission" impossible does offer an allure, particulary if you are successfull in demonstrating to others, how awesome it is. Almost every company wants an AWESOME product, the product that IS the magic bullet. But "me thinks" that after so manyy years of research on said chemical and no company has acheived miracle staus, then more than likely its a fools errand. My suggestion is to "feel the force" within YOU. Chemistry is only a means, not an end to the best photographs ever taken, printed, and viewed. Spending your time on chemistry has its advantage, being a good technicians is important, However it is not the miracle drug of "the famed" images made by artist using the medium of photography. More over "the Mission" impossible is one that is wrestled from your soul ONTO the support AKA the paper, the canvas, the wood, etc. . . . if you happen to be a good chemist that helps you ONLY A VERY LITTLE BIT, say 1/2 of 1%. So take heart, and buck up little camper, your path is forming, but read the signs on path CLOSELY or you will get lost. and end up in a ditch.

yes some of us like tinkering...
i have a formula for what i was told was a developer for 35mm film made from
something like dektol ( but very different ) with llama dung steeped in it ..
and the developer will make tri x and hp5 as grainless as a 11x14 negative when enlarged. ..

ymmv of course ..

I think there was a mis-translation in that article. Wasn't the original language referring to unicorn 'waste', using a polite word. There was also some doubt expressed about the most efficacious way to dissolve the powdered horn from that same animal, but that was for a cold-tone print-developer of course.

For the OP, try looking at the Moersch range of chemistry. They have some unusual and well researched developers (not involving mythical quadrupeds) and a range of alternatives for many photographic chemistries.

martin, my buddy in southern mississippi imported the llama dung from a guy that knew a guy that knew a guy,
so if the mother lode of LD i am getting from NH in the hills near eccho lake ( i might have call martha and the muffins for directions if i drive there )
doesn't work out i might have to try a different supplier ..
no unicorns that i know of in MS .. not sure if you can use llama dung developer for paper, i checked FED EX
and the prints should be here tomorrow can't wait to examine them ...
