And that is incredibly sad.
Yes, a very sad comment on our society. Well, I am glad I photographed my boys as they grew up (Color MF, and a long B&W series with the 8x10).

I'm 76. I won't shoot strangers' kids in public unless my Wife Flora is with me, and then I usually ask permission. Of course I shoot my 6 grandkids. Just street shooting can be a problem; I recall shooting folks at a crab festival in Beaufort SC when a woman accosted me, demanding that I not put my shots in the newspaper. I finally convinced her that I wasn't shooting for a paper! She was a real PITA! And then there was the young woman in a public library in NYC who was facing away from me and in the middle distance, perhaps 40 feet away.. I was shooting with a Praktica LTL and a 28mm lens, no flash. She came almost running up to me and demanded the film! This was before digital. When I refused she went off to "get security." We left, our visit was ruined.

People can be a PIA, but they are wrong about their “rights” 99% of the time. And the louder they are, the more wrong they generally are. Last time I had similar situation the lady was kind enough to just hold her hands in front of her face. Afterward... we smiled at each other with not a single word spoken.

There are rights and there is respect. At the core they are basically the same thing, but far too often people wave their rights like a sword to cover up their lack of respect for others.

This is very true. Unfortunately, Respect is often in short supply.

1. yes a necro post revival
2. i dont care about one.
3. The fact that the "author" of the linked article went with common trend and avoided the works of sally or jock, PROVES that the article was a fluff piece.

Why you ask? Well jock and sally are the modern worlds pornographer of children. If you let "society groups you disagree with" put Lewis Carrols nude photos of children up upon the pedestal of pedophilia, then you DEFINITELY need to put jock and sally on an even higher pedestal of pedophilia.
NOT doing so merely proves your a hack wanting to stay in the good graces of the establishment. Somewhat hard to play the punk type charecter if you follow central castings handbook of punk charecters.
Is that you, tballphoto?

Unless they are the children of close friends or relatives and the parents ask me to, I avoid shooting children,in fact if I'm out shooting Street and there are kids about, I put my camera away, because of the current public peodophile hysteria.

Well, in general, people don't know why you're taking photos, so any perceived motivation is rather convincing to them.

Actually, here in the US, anyone and everyone could take a photograph of your child if they're in public. Not that I would want to. Children are for people who can't have pets :}

It's more than sad to see how people put fear into children's minds. Strangers are not to be feared. This sort of thing is why I'm leaving Tucson. People come home and stay there in a siege mentality. They build walls around their homes, put razor wire on the top at times, and this is in good neighborhoods! Every window has burglar bars. Bunch of scared bunnies. Imagine having to go through a locked gate just to get into your front yard! No visiting w/ neighbors over a chain link fence, they have to put up a 6 or 8 foot cinder block wall and slather it w/ plaster for that Southwest look.

What I can't stand is this lie that strangers can't be trusted. I hate to use the Y word, but this is a thoroughly Northern concept in the US. Down South, people are taught from day one that other people are not to be feared, they're why we're here on earth, we need to have social lives. I mean, come on, hasn't the pandemic taught us that isolating yourself is unnatural and unhealthy for all involved? Living your life in fear of strangers and passing that fear onto your children is nuts.

I hope you are joking, having and bringing up children is one of the most rewarding experiencing in life, and certainly has been in my life.

Have you been ignoring all the crime going on?

crime ?

Yes its truly evil and perverted to inadvertantly let a stranger, well at least a male stranger photograph a child in public by accident.... but it is completely fine to let children run around the house, yard, beach in string bikinis..

not sure that is a crime

The photography of children can be many things to many diverse people. On one hand there are Sally, Jock, and the late David Hamilton. On the other hand there is Bill Gekas.

But I was mildly impressed that the author steered clear of a couple of very obvious examples of potential controversy: Jock and Sally.

Those arent actually controversial anymore. Sally got some award this year, yet again another meaningless uplifting of what does qualify as something illegal..

The real debate is why the heavy usage of underage people to promote ones photography or the use of children to create an artificial apperance of "strength" to ones photographs.

Some family likes to keep the identity of their kids private for reasons best known to them

Today this isn't just abut "pedophilia hysteria" (but still a lot is). Photographing the streets mostly means digital camera or other such device with never ending potential of that shot making it to the many web sites, several of high traffic, and the face of one's child ending up looked at by countless others. Few parents would approve of just that. Kids are great subjects to photograph (I almost said shoot, but I've heard nothing good about jails), so the changing times are sadly we need to recon with.

One of the problems, and this has happened to others as discussed on late night television. A man's photograph was lifted off a web page and without his knowledge or permission was posted on a public domain server. Someone else took the photograph and now that man's face is appearing on advertisements in Japan. People do not want their child's face used by others without their permission. It is just that simple and it is the parents' choice.

Absolutely correct.
