change battery mid roll?

hey all, new guy here. i’ve never had to change a battery mid roll before and am wondering how that works. i’m shooting nikons n6000 and n6006 bodies. i’ve read the manuals and done a bit of googling and can not find whether or not the bodies will remember what frame i’m on if i change batteries mid roll. any ideas/advice? thanks!

No experience with the N600x but I never had any issue with my F90x or F6.

In any case, your body will sense the end of the film when it's time to rewind it. There's not much to lose apart from how many frames are left on the roll.

of course! thank you i didn’t think of that. won’t matter to me what frame # i’m on , just that it will know when it’s done and nothings lost. i think that’s what i need! thanks!

I'd have thought that if you leave a battery in the camera and it completely dies while in use then unless there is some means of retaining a memory within a chip of some kind then the camera cannot recall that you were on say frame 6 when the battery died. If no mention is made in the instruction book about this then you'll have to rely on responses from those with you make and model who have had it happen.

I had a digital watch battery die on me recently and I literally watched the numbers disappear on the dial. A new battery required me to reset the watch but maybe a cheap watch is less sophisticated than a camera

It will be interesting to see what other users of these cameras say

My N80, N90 and F100 don't lose frame count when the battery is changed. The user manuals for the 6000/6006 don't mention anything different. Especially with AF and internal motor drives, these cameras require battery replacement much more frequently than older cameras. I'd suspect most electronic cameras that need to retain certain functions in memory have an internal memory chip that retains this information. Maybe the only way to be sure is to try it out for yourself and see what happens.

I don’t know your cameras, but the auto SLRs I own will remember the frame if you have to change out the battery. I’m not sure if there is a time limit, but I’d still change it relatively quick so there is less chance of loss.

I have not had a problem changing batteries mid roll on any camera. The camera designers were smart enough to make sure that changing batteries mid roll would not be a problem.

To be on the safe side, make a note of the current exposure number. If your camera somehow messes this up, none of my cameras ever have, rewind the film and then shoot blank photos until you get back to your previous shot number, shoot one more for safety, and resume.

I have changed batteries on multiple cameras. In general the counter is only reset when you open and close the back.
Most electronic cameras have a little bit of nonvolatile memory which keeps track of frame number and basic settings.

I had one of the low-end Canon SLRs - perhaps the EOS300. I changed battery mid roll and as soon as the new battery was in the camera no longer recognized there was film loaded. I had to carefully pull it out in a changing bag. Another time with another low-end Canon a battery change resulted in the film being rewound into the cassette - not happy at all with that as it was one of my last rolls of Neopan 1600.

happy to hear that. sounds like my copy had a faulty sensor.
