Causes for Color Casts

I currently am using an Epson 4990 scanner, Silverfast Ai Studio with IT8 calibration, and Photoshop CS3 to scan and correct my negatives. In addition, my monitor is recalibrated on a monthly basis with a laCie Blue Eyes 2 colorimeter.

Notwithstanding my efforts, I occasionally come across a roll of film that produces a distinctive color cast even though I frequently scan that type of film with no ill effects (e.g., Kodak Ultracolor 100 or Kodak Portra VC).

Although this problem is only occasional, I have begun to wonder about the underlying causes of color casts. Since I frequently calibrate and recalibration has no apparent effect on these renegade rolls, I do not believe that it is a problem with either my hardware or software. Instead, I have begun to suspect other causes such as the exposure and ambient lighting.

Although I feel certain that these may be contributors, I cannot help but think that there are other factors beyond exposure and ambient lighting since I have photographed under conditions similar to the renegade rolls without encountering a color cast.

Can anyone add to this?
