Just spotted this coming up on BBC Radio 4 - the story of the French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson's journey to the Soviet Union in 1954, when he was the first Western photographer to be admitted behind the Iron Curtain since WWII.

Apologies for the (very!) short notice but it should be available to listen again on the website for the next 7 days.

Thanks for posting, I look forward to listening to this.

I also enjoyed reading the book, "A Russian Journal" by John Steinbeck and Robert Capa. For those interested, here's the synopsis (from Amazon):

Just after the iron curtain fell on Eastern Europe John Steinbeck and acclaimed war photographer, Robert Capa ventured into the Soviet Union to report for the "New York Herald Tribune". This rare opportunity took the famous travelers not only to Moscow and Stalingrad - now Volgograd - but through the countryside of the Ukraine and the Caucasus. A "Russian Journal" is the distillation of their journey and remains a remarkable memoir and unique historical document. Steinbeck and Capa recorded the grim realities of factory workers, government clerks, and peasants, as they emerged from the rubble of World War II. This is an intimate glimpses of two artists at the height of their powers, answering their need to document human struggle.

Caught the tale end today but it was too little and too late to make a judgement but sounded as if it was worth a listen. If people can get back into looking at the Radio Times wireless section instead of the TV section all the time then there are some gems there.

Enough radio 4 and it's just possible that we could end up with a questioning, critical and "well versed in many subjects" nation. Now that's enough to give any politician and tabloid editors nightmares!

Possibly, at least if you discount the Today programme, the moral maze, any questions / answers...

Even Radio 3 has gone down market with 'The breakfast show' etc.,.. and Jazz on 3 has been relegated to Monday nights...
