Cars as still life

I like to take photos of many things but most of all, I like to shoot cars. Mostly, I like to shoot the details. There are plenty of cars photographers out there that take fantastic studio lit, etc... shots. But, things like intakes, emblems, trim, and other important design elements are often left out. I like to shoot those. I appreciate the car as a whole but being someone who has restored and enjoys working on cars, I appreciate the little things that make up the whole. Most of what I will post here are shot using Pentax 35mm gear but as I use more of my 120 gear, I will post those as well. Hope you like them.

Nice shots! I'm not much of a car guy, but I too really enjoy the finer details of cars, especially classics. I think it's because backgrounds of car shots are almost never appealing, so I found close-in shots are my favorite. (Which one is the Toyota?)

I like car shots too but find the single headlight shots to be cliche. Nice to see some other details.

I agree. I try not to take those unless they are special or interesting. Like that Stutz Blackhawk that is third from the top. Fluted headlamps are pretty cool too.

That Toyota 2000 is iconic. That configuration makes the nose of that car special.

You'll find a few shots of assorted mascots (hood ornaments) amongst the images I've posted to the gallery. There are a few other members that spring to mind that also shoot & post automobiles, some bordering on the complete abstract.

I did an automobile series a few years back. I tend to avoid 'classic' cars and cliche views. Mostly Fords, Toyotas and other mundane collections of metal and plastic.

I have had numerous MGs, worked at a classic British car shop, and my daily driver was an 83 Land Cruiser for a while. I love the old stuff. I do appreciate the new stuff as well my gravitate towards the classics.

I joke, well, not really a joke, with my wife that as soon as we get a place with a two car garage, I am going to hang some white sheets, grab some LED lights and set up a make shift 'studio' and take photos of anything that I can. Even my boring Focus daily. With the right lighting and angles, interesting photos could come be had.

I used to have this thing about getting the whole car in the shot. Drove me nuts that they looked so "overdone". Once I started experimenting with isolating various elements of the car, it got a lot more fun.

What? That is a great magazine. Your first two shots look like a DBR1? I had that chance to photograph the one that Moss, Brabham, etc... drove. Very pretty car.

Some neat stuff here. I won't post it as it isn't film, but s few years back I visited the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in Auburn Indiana on my way back from a graduation. Wow, what an assortment of cars, mostly high end. One detail which I shot was the glass "wind wing" on the windshield pillar of a 1926 Duesenberg which had cut (or perhaps sandblasted) floral designs in the outer corners of the glass. Amazing what decoration and detail one could get for 60K 1926 dollars!

Nah, hate it, I really do, hate crowds, did it once when I was shooting P1 powerboat racing and TyPhoo Tea wanted me to shoot their P1 boat there, too many people.

That is unfortunate. It is the highlight of the car calendar for me. When I was in Manchester for uni, I regret not being able to make the drive down to see it.
