Carbon Transfer Printing

I am pleased to announce that the first of a three-part series I authored on carbon printing has just appeared in Silvershotz - Volume 4 Edition 1. Silvershotz is a UK based print journal of fine art photography. The series provides an over-view of carbon printing, but is more image oriented than technical.

Parts 1 and 2 of the series will focus on monochrome carbon printing. In Part 3, I will discuss the history and current practice of color carbon printing, with some color images by me and by four of the leading color carbon printers in the world (well, five in fact, since the four includes a husband and wife team from Sweden!!).

Most of my own work in this three-part series has not been shown before, either on web sites or in shows. In fact, all of the work in Part 1 is from negatives made in 2006 and 2007 and printed this year. Approximately half of my carbon prints in this series were made from hybrid type negatives, the others were directly printed from in-camera negatives.

I am also pleased to have made the first posting to this new sub-forum.

Thanks so much for your work in setting it up. I anticipate a lot of productive exchanges here.

And BTW, most, if not all, of the images in Part 1 were made on Gabriola Island, in the Georiga Straits just outside of Vancouver.

BTW, I think the prints look very nice in the edition. I was originally concerned about breathing room, but it came out well. The View of Cuenca in particular looks great on my 24" iMac. BTW, the original was a 7X17" Ilford FP4+ negative. Detail on the negative is tremendous since I was able to use a mid-range aperture on this shot that gave greate resolution. Although not visible in the print, in the negative you can actually read the time on a clock on one of the church towers in the distance. The lens used for that shot was an old 360mm convertible Symmar.
