Carbon Printing Workshop with Sandy King

Details for Sandy's Carbon Workshop have been added and are available (there was a url link here which no longer exists) or through the conference (there was a url link here which no longer exists) .

In all the PM's and posts this was one of, if not the most requested workshop. I have not seen Sandy's carbon prints, but I did get a chance receantly to see quite a few made 120 years ago. They were outstanding and truely unique prints that looked as good today as they did when made. I am told that the technique that Sandy teaches is even more impressive.

Please Note:
In the interest of insuring that the Instructors get their pound of flesh (frankly it is more like table scraps) and to get you folks motivated to sign up early. We will be raising the price of all Workshops in September. So, as my father would say Do it NOW.

Bob, I was the first one! Regardless of my differences with Sandy, I know through the grapevine that he is an excellent instructor and at this price it is a real bargain to be able to learn from him what has taken him years to optimize.

Hi folks,

Thanks for your comments. I will do my best to present you with a great carbon workshop in Toronto. And I look forward to meeting all of you and visiting Toronto. I studied a couple of summer in Quebec City and visited Montreal three times but his will be my first time in Toronto.

I will post some more files of carbon prints on the gallery soon, and will of course be happy to answer any questions you might have as to how best prepare for the workshop.

Shoul we bring a negative? 1.6 to 2.0 DR, right?

I am checking on cash flow and time availability to take your workshop, Sandy, but if we don't have a densitometer what's the best way to make sure the negs work for carbon? If it prints well on pd/pt will it work?

I found your book on carbon at Photographers Formulary, but for now I'm interested in seeing some of your personal work.

I calibrate at about log DR 1.75 to print with carbon and straight palladium, so that would be optimum DR for the workshop.

Please bring a small negative, say 4X5 or 5X7, if you want to try to make a real carbon print. In principle my goal would be for everyone to leave the workshop with a print, but that probably won't happen unless we have morning and afternoon sessions, and even then the wet/dry times of carbon are such that there is only one chance for a keeper. People who have done multiple day workshops with me in the past will understand the time constraints as to the wet and dry times with carbon.

I think it is more important that you see how everthing works than to actually make a print. However, once the time period is locked in, and the particpants also, I will tailor the time to maximize the experience for everyone.

Given the time for the workshops I think this is the best approach, I will forego bringing a negative and will just watch you do your stuff.

Hi,

I don't have a web site at this time, but you can see some of my images in the gallery at http://www.mamutphoto.com/galerie/index.html, as well in articles on kallitype and UV light sources at www.unblinkingeye.com.

Unfortuntely none of these images will show you what a real carbon print looks like because carbon prints, at least the way I make them, have a lot of relief, which is difficult or impossible to convey in web images. Magic did a very good job of illustrating this look in one of the thread on the alternative photograhy forum on this site. Have a look at it if you have the time.

Hi Murray,

An interesting observation. However, to be really honest, I have never felt completely at peace with my equipment and processes. In fact, I always try to push them beyond where they want to go.

I would describe the process as more of a very long war, with an occasional victory and defeat, with long truces in the intervals.

This is especially true of th carbon process.

That's a Very good description of how I feel many a day, especially in the alt processes. Some days it just doesn't matter what you do something will go wrong and on others everything just seems to go right--why can't we have more of the latter and less of the former?

A little late in getting back to you.

But in answer to your question, yes, if a negative prints well in palladium it should print well in carbon. I look for a DR of about 1.8 in my carbon negatives.

I have my spot booked with Sandy and Jorge.
I now realize that I possibly cannot do both. I will give you my spot for Sandys course no charge.
Running this thing will definately take up all my time and I want to make sure everything runs smoothly.
No offence Sandy , what I really want to do is colour carbon and we will have time at the conference to discuss.

Certainly no offense taken. I have run conferences a few times in my career at the university and know where one must put their priorities.

A couple of comments.

First, what type of UV exposing system will be available for the workshop? Having this information could prove useful in anticipating exposure conditions.

Second, I have made my flight connections to Toronto for the conference but so far have not arranged lodging. I appreciate local lore if someone from Toronto might suggest a modest type of hotel fairly adjacent to the confernce center I would be appreciative. You could contact me directly about this at sanking@clemson.edu.
