The national parks around Moab are well known for their unique geologic features, remote hikes and recreation opportunities. Now, Canyonlands National Park has another claim to fame. Last week, Canyonlands was awarded gold-tier International Dark-Sky Park status by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA).

Canyonlands is one of less than 50 other parks and locations around the world to be recognized for unique stargazing opportunities. According to the International Dark-Sky Association’s website, an IDA International Dark Sky Park (IDSP) is “a land possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and/or public enjoyment.”

One other national park in southern Utah —Capitol Reef — along with Hovenweep and Natural Bridges national monuments have also received International Dark-Sky Parks designation. Hovenweep received the recognition in 2014, and Natural Bridges National Monument was named the world’s first International Dark Sky Park in 2007.
