Canoscan 9000F Mark II

I have just received this scanner and just wonder if others are using it and what results you are getting. I will be using it for 35mm slides, negatives B&W and color and also Mediulm format negatives. I have looked at Vue Scan but not purchased it yet. I have Photoshop so I can do post processing.

Yes I have read old post about the 9000f and Epson scanners, just hope someone might have new info. Would like to know if they are using the provided software, or Vue Scan etc.

I get more-than-acceptable results scanning in both 120 film as well as 4x5.

































(Will listen to the crickets chirp until someone asks about scanning 4x5 with this unit. )

Thanks for the info, and yes how do you do 4x5. I know its been said that flatbed scanners are not good enough for 35mm, but just hoping it would be good enough for web posts. I still have my Minolta Scan Dual IV that I can use for 35mm, but don't have updated software for it. Thinking of getting VueScan that would operater both scanners.

I took the standard MF negative carrier and cut down one side so I could slide in a 4x5 neg in it. Scan 2¼ x 5 of the neg, turn it 180° and repeat. Merge the two scans in post.

Marvin, I have the 9000FII, and I like it ok. When I bought it, I had no plans or expectations of every going to 4x5, or anything larger then 120. About 5 months after getting it, I got a 4x5 Calumet....

I've found it to be difficult to stitch the 4x5. It's not the stitching part, but it's the exposure part of the two sides of the negative. Using the Canon software, it seems even with no adjustments set, it still applies some adjustments that I can't seem to avoid. The result in my experiences, has been a slight difference between the two sides in the exposure, and is noticeable and almost impossible to fix when stitched.

One thing I'm looking into is getting the BetterScanning film holders. The supplied holders suck for 120, especially if is there is any curve in the film width-wise.

I just bought a replacement to cut up. I still have the original 120 film holder.

I've been using it exclusively for 2 1/4 and 4 x 5, with excellent results. I also have a CoolScan V for 35mm, so can't comment on the quality of 35mm on the CanoScan.

My only problem, as such, is that I have a Mac, and the latest driver for the CanoScan is for Snow Leopard, which is several OS X generations ago. Seems that Windows users are better catered to than Mac users, which is ironic given that the Mac is supposed to be all about graphic arts. (No Mac versus PC flame wars, please.) My solution is that I have an external drive with a bootable copy of Snow Leopard, so when I want to use the CanoScan I connect it to my Mac and boot into that. Works fine, just a bit inconvenient.
