I recently ordered a Canon model "F" power winder to use on my Canon F-1n (that's the second version, not the New F-1). In addition to the 2 fps advance feature, I understand it also allows shutter priority automation with this camera. How does it do this? IOW, here is a fully manual camera with a battery only for the light meter, and somehow it acquires shutter priority capability when the winder is attached. What is the nature of this small miracle?
Thanks, ronwhit

Benji is right, the Power Winder F will do nothing more than advance the film when mounted on an F-1 (original) or F-1n (I own a Power Winder F and an original F-1).

Shutter-preferred automation is only available on the F-1N and the Power Winder FN.

Thank you benjiboy and Mackinaw for your quick and informative replies. I thought that shutter priority automation seemed unrealistic, but the item description (by a well known seller of used equipment) stated that the winder had that feature. They too were likely thinking of the New F-1, and not the F-1n. Great cameras all. ronwhit

I think you need an aperture control unit do have shutter priority AE. I don't know what it's called though. It's kind of a servo motor that interfaces with the meter and turns the aperture ring.

Chan is correct. You can get shutter-speed priority automation with an original F-1 by installing the “Servo EE Finder.” This is a finder which is installed in place of the eye-level prism. A small arm is also installed that connects the EE finder to the lens. Once installed and with an FD lens set to the “A” mark, you can get shutter-speed automation. And this will work with Power Winder F.

But, the Servo EE finder is a large, bulky unit that requires it’s own battery pack. The EE finder and battery easily adds many ounces (pounds?) to the camera.

We laugh at such a monstrosity now, but back in 1970, this was cutting-edge stuff.
