A fairly clean and working Canon P rangefinder with a Jupiter-8 that has been cleaned and relubed, shimmed for proper focus.

Ever wonder if a Leica 35mm rangefinder setup would work for you but don't have $1500 to run a test? Here's a functioning system that might help you decide if you want to go deeper into rangefinders.

The Canon P has clean bright frame lines and a clean aligned rangefinder patch. Shutter and wind system were lubricated. Shutter speeds are 'good.' Meaning it's been a while since I tested them but they were all pretty close before but I wouldn't shoot slide film without some testing. Negative B&W or color, you'll be fine.

The lens has some 'cleaning marks' and a small real scratch on the edge, about 3mm long. Focus is smooth, aperture ring is smooth (no indents as standard on this lens). Not the cleanest, looks hazy but a flashlight test only shows dust. Hey, it's a Jupiter-8! A 'perfectly good' lens, nothing wrong with it, some would say not much right either but again it will take photos.

I have held on to this as a user for the times I want to shoot 35mm, but it's time to face it- I don't like rangefinders, I don't like 35mm film, so let this one move on to someone who will appreciate it and use it.

This isn't mint, it isn't perfect. It's a functioning user. I stand behind it as a user camera, but don't expect a cosmetic winner or a mechanically perfect camera.

$225 including US shipping.

bump.

Maybe I was a bit too harsh in describing this camera and lens. It's very smooth and could be a daily user for a long time, best as I can tell with a 60 year old camera and lens. Takes very nice images.

How do you rewind the film?

How are the shutter curtains? Wrinkly or?.. Is the RF blob bright enough to use easily? Is it aligned?

I once had a P. While no Leica M, it's much more modern and quicker/easier to use than a Leica Barnack, and leagues better than any Soviet RF I've owned (Zorki, Fed, Kiev).

Curtain are slightly wrinkled, but for a P in great condition.

Rangefinder is clear and fairly bright. Not a Leica M but quite usable. Frame lines are fairly bright.

It's funny... We agonize over a few bucks when we're buying something rare, serviceable, and in working order...
you could snap a ton of wonderful photos with this setup before tiring of the images it creates... and when you don't want to shoot film, mount this lens on your mirrorless and go nuts.
These are still a bargain, in my book.

$200? Sure, you can get a Canonet QL17iii in bright yellow skin for about this cost but this is a real camera with a real lens, eh?
