Hello All,

Just started to think about digital negatives and I have read "Digital Negatives" by Reeder-Hinkle, and purchased and read Dan Burkholder's "Inkjet Negative Companion".

OK, before I go out and buy an Epson printer, I have a very good friend in the printing business who makes all of my digital prints.
And so I got to thinking, is there a curve out there for the Canon C6010 which is what he uses for most of his printing.
He also has an Epson 9900 if I decide to go BIG!

BTW, I'm looking to do Platinum/Palladium definitely, and possibly Cyanotype, Albumen.
ANY advice would be very welcome at this point!

Maybe some more info is in order.
My plan is to use Arches Platine paper, chemicals from Bostick & Sullivan Na2 Digital Negative pack, and Pictorico Premium OHP Transparency Film.

Even just a starting point would be helpful.

The Canon C6010 is a laser printer, and it has a resolution of only 1200x1200. I have no idea what a negative would look like from this beast, but I am guessing that it won't approach a negative from an Epson desktop.
The 3800 can deliver 2880x1440 and the 1400 can do 5760x1440. My guess is no one is using the Canon because it's not the best technology for the job. Also, one of the great advantages of digital negatives is that there is no service bureau -- you make, print, and correct them in real time. And believe me when I tell you there is a lot of correction and tweaking while you are calibrating and even after.

OK, that's quite a difference. I have an old Epson R380 printer. Is that something that will get me started?

The R380 is a 6-color printer that uses Claria (dye) inks. I have never used an R380, but the 1400 uses Claria ink and I found it provided insufficient UV blocking for platinum or carbon transfer. The R380 should be fine if you replace the OEM ink set, but I wouldn't recommend this as an introduction to digital negatives as calibration can be a frustrating exercise. An Epson Ultrachrome printer with Mark Nelson's PDN is probably the simplest way to get started.
