Canon FL lens on a T90 body

I got myself a Canon T90 and an FL 55 1:1.2 lens (I have other Canon camera and lenses but I am trying to make the above combo work).

As I understand it I have to use the camera in stopped-down mode. I think I have successfully metered a scene as I am checking the exposure time with another camera and I get to the same time (p.s. I have set the film speed as 50 ASA on both cameras).

However, I have a few questions about what is displayed in the T90 finder:


1. When I attach the lens to the camera, the aperture gets set to 5.6 and the shutter speed is set at (I am assuming) whatever is the light coming through the lens wherever I am pointing it (my test subject gives me a speed of 1/180 sec). How can this be? The camera does not know the maximum aperture of the lens so how can it set a shutter speed?

2. However, as I change the lens from Auto to Manual and shut the aperture down, the time changes. Is the camera making an assumption as to what the aperture of the lens is?
My other camera and the T90 in stopped-down mode both give me an exposure of my test subject of 1/15 sec at f5.6.

3. In other words when using an FL lens on the T90 I must ignore the viewfinder data unless the stopped-down lever is pushed in?

HI Claudiio,

The camera thinks a f5.6 lens is attached. This is normal, to be expected. You must meter the lens on stopped-down mode.

The most easy way to use this lens, really, is to just use stopped-down AE. Or meter with a handheld meter and use the camera in manual mode.

I own the same lens, by the way.

Yep, I just wanted to confirm that the 5.6 was some kind of default.

Unless lens-speed reading switched off, by going into any stopped down mode, any FD camera will always read the speed of a lens, and be it a virtual lens. The position of the unloaded lens-speed feeler at the body then is what the camera takes for granted.
