I have an FD with the 'Breech Lock' mount...the big silver ring, not the black ring with a silver button. Would take-down be similar for both do you think.?
I have a 50mm 1.8 - 16 and the aperture adjustment is a bit funky. Thought I would pull it apart and see what is going on. I could follow this diagram.....

or maybe this video.....

Hi C,
Once you get inside they're similar but the breech lock is a bit more annoying to me.
The main access to the innards from the back are three cross point screws on the back. Two
of them are covered by the locking ring & it simply turns. If it's the newer FD there's a small
spring aligned with the infinity mark that needs to be pressed to free it.
Watch or mark the mount so it goes back together correctly & the levers line up.

Yeah...it is the older, breech, with the silver ring at the camera 'hole'.
I will follow that video and diagram and see what happens. Will take some kind of notes like you say.
Thanks

You might want to try a squirt of lighter fluid and/or a touch of very light, thin oil (I use "dry" bike chain oil) on the most likely places before tearing into it and see if that helps first. The Canons can be a PITA to access the aperture assy if you've never been in there before. Also have a look and see if anything is bent or binding anywhere. If you have to go in there, have a digital camera handy to take pics as you go along.

^^^ Completely agree with everything that's been said above. Thankfully the 50mm f1.8 is an extremely common lens as it was the kit lens back then, so you'd probably only be out $10-20 (if that) if none of the above works and you take it apart to no avail. Should that happen, just pick another one up and keep shooting! Best lens for the price anywhere I think.

Yes...absoulutely. I must have 4-5 of these...mostly of the newer type...black ring with a silver button. If I put the F to this lens, I will use another. I think I can make it work as a big learning experience if nothing else.
I was in the painters union and also, work on guitar amps... so I have some mechanical aptitude. If I screw it up.....So Be It
