Canon F1 first roll just loaded

Hi All,
I purchase a F1 and a FD 50mm F1.2L a while ago and never used it. I recently sent it in to be checked out before I started using it, and the service was only $75. It only needed a bit of speed adjustment. I wasn’t that surprised as this camera feels like it’s built like a tank. Anyway I want to start buying lenses for it and was surprised at how expensive they are priced. Someone gave me their cheapest 24mm option which is the f2.8 but the outer element has some defect or wear and I’m wondering if it can be buffed out, see photo.

I don't think FD lens are expensive at least few years ago when I checked.
Why don't you clean it with proper lens tissue.

Hard to tell from the photo if that's just a greasy smudge or actual scuffing damage to the glass. If the glass is damaged, I wouldn't use that lens. You're going to have problems with flare and low-contrast images. That FD 24mm is not too expensive here in the US - you should be able to find one in good condition for about $100. Some fast Canon FD lenses can still be expensive, but not a lot more than comparable Nikon lenses. There's just a lot fewer FD lenses available on the used market.

I have some reasonable prices on FD lenses in my classified ad. You might also be interested in an M42 to FD adapter which is just a thin shim of metal which will give you access to a much bigger pool of lenses, although you will have to manually control their aperture. Particularly for super-bargains there are some off-brand gems for less than $30 around.

A big bargain in FD is the 135mm f/2.5 which is one of my favorites that can be had for around $50.

When I bought a T90 I found few lens, not L level, but good slower glass, a 28 2.8, 50 1.4 and 100 (or was it a 105) 2.8 the 100 was a bit more expensive, the others I though were good value for the money. Perhaps with the onset of mirrorless digital bodies folks are seeking out FD lens. The 3 lens I had were has good any other brand I have or had used, sold the T90 and lens I did not need another rabbit hole to go down.
