Last fall, I picked up a beautiful Canon F-1N. I love this camera and have shot about 15 rolls of film through it with no issues. The camera does not look to have every been used and the pressure plate on the back cover still had the original factory plastic cover on it. Last week, the battery appeared to have died, which surprised me. When I swapped in a new battery with no fix, I realized that there's something wrong. With a tested good battery installed, the camera is completely dead. No meter, no fail-safe 1/60 shutter speed, nothing. With the battery removed, the fail-safe shutter speed works again.

I've not opened it up to see what's happening yet, but will do that once things calm down a bit in other areas of life. For now, I'm really coming to love a Pentax MX as my EDC. My Canon itch is still scratched by a small fleet of refurbished A-1s that I maintain. When I diagnose the issue and exact a repair, I'll document what I did here. It's a shame, really, as that had become my most trusted, bulletproof camera. It may take a while to regain enough confidence in it to take that one abroad.

Tim, you've probably already done the usual cleaning work on the power supply contacts.

There's always the possibility that one or both of the power supply connections are broken by corrosion.

This can happen suddenly and I once had it with a Canon T90 with battery acid damage, the ground cable came off, which wasn't visible from the outside.

Thanks Andreas. I'll start working on it once I clear a few other items off of the workbench.
