The shutter curtains on my EOS-3 camera got messed up. Does anyone know how much this might cost to repair? The camera has been out of production since around 2005 or 2006, so I suspect parts are still available from Canon.

I'm thinking of calling KEH in the morning to see what they can do. Anyone know of a good repair shop with good service and good turn-around? It does not have to be local...

This really sucks!!!

Thanks,
Silver

Why not check the Canon website for a factory authorized service depot for a camera of such recent vintage? They can get original parts and probably have factory adjustment equipment.

Yea, I could just call Canon, and their service center is just 20 minutes from my home too. However I supect they'll charge an arm and leg...perhaps I'll call them in the AM....I cannot believe I was so careless as to touch those curtains...

Don't rule out the possibility of delegating your 3 to spare-parts duty and buying another in nice condition to use instead. With the price of film cameras in the marketplace today, entire used cameras are often less expensive than having repairs done. Of course, you will know what you have if you repair your camera, so that should be taken into account.

Don't beat your head against the wall too hard about it. Many shutters have been killed in the photographic era. At least your hardware options these days are quite affordable.

Depending on what's wrong with the blades, whether they've been pushed out of they're track or bent and creased And how the repair service feels about the way the day feels to them.
I've been able to salvage shutters where the blades are merely out of they're track & not creased. Usually as a good will gesture. Takes a few minutes to do.
If the blades are creased or bent, most likely it's going to need replacement of the shutter assembly and that's going to be expensive

John, a used Canon EOS-3 film body can be had for under $200 on eBay...do you suggest a new shutter install will be more? Argh...I really screwed the pooch this time :-(

Silverglow,
I haven't had to buy a shutter for a loooong time. They were expensive when the cameras were current production. If you were able to price the part from Canon you would have a wholesale price, an independent repair service is going to add 20-40% and labor is additional.
Canon can give you a price if they still service the model. They just used different category of repair & added parts cost.
Unfortunately I think you're going to break the $200 mark.

Are some of the blades creased?

I'm a bit fuzzy on this, but I recall someone, somewhere, saying the entire Canon shutter mechanism is replaceable as a unit and really doesn't cost that much.

I don't recall what camera was being discussed but call Canon anyway and see what they charge for a factory auth. job, then consider the FleaBay option of a new (to you) camera if you consider Canon's cost to high.

I dropped off the body to Canon's Irvine, Calif service center. They told me $206.00, and they'll "throw in" a free cleaning too. Ok, so I could just replace the camera with a used one in excellent shape via eBay, but being human, irrational at times, and I dare say sentimental, I opt'd to have the camera repaired. I traveled with that body all over the world, so how could I let it down?!? ;-)

Still, the lesson here is that I really do need to be more careful, and especially when using tools no longer in production as there will come a day when even Canon will not be able to fix it, for lack of parts.

Color me irrational again, but I recently added a 2nd and 3rd EOS-3 film bodies to my stable, just in case one of them goes out beyond repair, or gets stolen, lost. And besides, being a prime lens only shooter, I love going on shoots with at least two bodies, mounting two different primes and/or two different ISO films.

Thanks everyone for your contributions!

Oh, and someone asked if the curtain blades were creased...yes they were. Badly...I don't want to talk about it anymore....da pain, da pain!

$206 isn't that irrational to spend. You will know exactly what you have when you get it back, and it should serve you for many years.

Buying two more? Now that's irrational.

Hey... no. I didn't give you permission to look in my camera closet... no! Stop! That is NOT a pile of Nikons, I swear!
