I bought the abovementioned lens and was shooting for an hour when i noticed a strange electrical sort of burning smell. the camera still contiuned to work (and still does) but i noticed it was sort of warm when i was on my way home. not hot but warm enough for me to notice.

The next day when explaning the problem to some friends (and at a private photography workshop) I could get people to notice the smell when i put the lens off and on if you quickly held the camera up to your nose.

I found out from the facilitator that the 1.4 lens has had a lot of focus jam problems, which luckily i didn't have but the smell was faintly noticeable by him.

luckjily today the shop replaced the lens but i am sure i can still smell it when i put it off and on (i'm going to shoot another gig wed night so i will keep an eye out).

i'm sorry to say that the camera i was using is a d------, i've had no such lens problem with it before. the lens also seems fine in my little 500n but i'm worried that the faulty-ish other lens could've caused problems to my camera. the shop guy said that all the canon repairers would do is just take some pics, charge a few hundred and then say nothing was wrong.

but has anyone had issues with this lens or a similar burning smell with a lens? if so did they get their cam checked out as well?

I have no cameras with electronics in the lenses, though I've dealt quite a lot with electronics in other stuff.

If the lens was drawing enough current to produce burning smells, then the wires to the contacts in the lens mount are surely stressed at the very least. I would think it would be a good idea to get the camera checked out as well.
