Can anyone describe what an original genuine Canon strap was like on a AE1-P?

Was it like this...
CanonStrap.jpg

Plain Black, Black and Silver, did it have a neck rubber?

Steve.

Hey Steve, me again... your resident AE-1P expert..

If I had to guess, I'd say that this strap is from a later, perhaps EOS model, but I could be wrong. The strap on my original setup didn't have the red lines. Though the rubber and general construction looks very similar.

Thanks again!

Been looking on eBay and the all black ones have the rubber looking a little tired, may consider a black with grey stripes (same design as above) looks in better condition, but probably a reasonable trade off between something original and something usable.

Thanks for the offer John!!!!

Although I have purchased this one off eBay last night, so hopefully it will be in reasonable condition. I think its the correct one (Both the red and grey stripe appear to be EOS versions).

The one with the red stripe in the picture is actually from a Canon Compact camera something like an AF 35M the EOS straps were wider.

I can agree maybe on the red stripe one, however I have found a photo of my EOS 600 when I sold it on ebay in 2003 and it has the thin grey/black strap. Also in the grey/black strap on the neck rubber it has a small square that can be removed to cover the EOS viewfinder when taking long exposures.

Thanks everyone for the information, especially John for the offer! I have concluded that Black for AE-1 AE-1P etc., Black Red maybe for a compact (as above) and fairly sure Black Grey was for the early EOS 650, 620, 600.

This looks like the right one. I have to say though, these are very uncomfortable and quite awkward to use. For lack of anything better, I have one of these on a rather large Fuji GW690 right now. I'd choose a modern-style, wide strap over these anyday.

I used to sell these cameras when they were current and the Canon AE1 when new because it didn't have a built in viewfinder blind(as the A1 and T90 have) to stop extraneous light from entering the viewfinder and effecting the meter reading, it came with a square rubber thing with two loops on it that fitted onto the strap and the viewfinder that could be used for this purpose, I still have one in fact that I still use on my E.F.

I thought the AE1-P and possibly others had the square plastic ones that slid onto the hot shoe when not in use. (Like I have with this AE1-P)

I don't intend to use the AE1-P regularly, so not to worried about strap comfort. Just wanted original for show and also that 'could be' used when required.

The square plastic thing that were supplied to go in the hot shoe is to protect the flash contacts and open the battery compartment, it doesn't fit the the viewfinder I just tried it on my A1.

It fits the viewfinder on my AE1-P.

It is referred to in the user manual as the 'viewfinder cover'
... remove the viewfinder cover from the accessory shoe (page 11) open the battery cover using the viewfinder cover (page 12)

It only works if the little lugs on each side are still attached and have not broken off, it will just about work with one lug.

I have both the AE1P and the A1, the viewfinder cover is interchangeable in both models, and for both it sits in the hot shoe, and acts as the viewfinder cover and to open the battery cover as already mentioned.

The viewfinder is exactly the same in both models. Actually the bodies are very much the same.

The viewfinder cover was to be used when using the bulb function so that the metering is not affected by light coming from the back of the viewfinder.

Also, the optical corrections sold as accessories would slide in these little lugs too, like the viewfinder cover does. Much more useful accessory if one wears corrective glasses.
I would not do without it, as it allows me to focus without glasses which is more comfortable.

The Canon A1 has a built in viewfinder blind the lever is to the left of the eyepiece, the Canon flash contact cover I have will not slip into the key ways of the A1 viewfinder.
